Should the Internet be Censored? Essay -- essays research papers

Ximenes 1Should the Internet Be Censored? No bones about it, the Internet needs to be criminalise. At least according to Gerry Morgan, president of an Internet contents abider and a parent, he among other non-denominational Christian parents claims that they have found the only realistic state to the Internet porn-crisis. Theyve created a program where all Web sites are pre-screened, avoiding any material that can be harmful to kids (Watson). They say that the Internet has to be censored because it has material, especially pornography, which can and will be offensive to others. But not everybody agrees with that. The censorship of the Internet is still a very controversial issue, and people all over the world debate whether or not this is a case against free diction. While Morgan states that by censoring the Internet well be protecting ourselves and our children, Mr. Jeffrey Pollock, a Republican from Oregon who used to think the same, recently changed his mind when he found out that his own site had been blocked by an Internet filter. afterwards the incident, Mr. Pollock expressed that To mandate the federal government to legislate morality, I find abhorrent(Schwartz). The disagreement on this issue continues and every person has a different opinion on what would be a satisfying solution to it. Even though I agree that it is not any parents desire for his/her children to have access to pornography or other potentially offensive material on the Internet, it is not worth jeopardizing our right to free speech in the name of morality. The truth is we cannot protect our children from all the violence or pornography available in todays world just as our parents could not protect us. Ximenes 2The interest and curiosity that children and adolescents have on what we, as a society, may rule as immoral did not come with the Internet. Similarly, the governments attempts in determining the publics thoughts also began before the Internet. In fact, governments around t he world had been trying to control the peoples minds for a long time and some of them are still trying to do so by filtering information. There is a report from the comprehensive lot of print and electronic news media that shows that nearly two-thirds of countries restrict press freedom, that would be... ...e effective than regulatory control.Ximenes 4There are also ways in which government or other agencies may provide Internet control without censorship. For example, it may be necessary to implement laws which require of all Internet servers that provide pornography to have their sites names clearly stating the content of the material about to be seen. This would at least prevent children from accessing such sites accidentally. By doing that the government would be helping the parents who dont want their kids to see that kind of material, but would not be interfering on the right to free speech that the Constitution assure us to have.In summary, censoring the Internet falls int o the controversial category of censoring free speech. Therefore, it is a violation of the Constitution to apply censorship to such a commonly used source of information. Instead of banning material from the Internet we should make sure that we have clearly stated information. Perhaps government preventive may be necessary to assure that Internet servers comply with regulations. However, parental guidance and control still remain the most reliable ways of breastplate against misuse of the cyberspace.

A précis concerning Burleigh Wilkins, Can Terrorism Be Justified :: Terror Attack Septermber 11 Essays

A prcis concerning Burleigh Wilkins, Can Terrorism Be Justified I.On September 11, 2001, I along with the breathe of the nation, witnessed historical terror and devastation as the Twin Towers, a long-standing symbol of American prosperity, crumbled to the ground after two hijacked airplanes flew through them early that morning. Almost concurrently in Washington D.C., a third airliner flew into the Pentagon, and shortly after, a fourth hijacked plane crashed in Somerset Country, PA. Few survivors emerged from the rubble in the end, thousands were dead, and, without explanation or apology, millions of lives had been changed forever all in a matter of minutes - a painful contrast to the far reaching affects that this sudden, single act had perpetuated. Over a month later we are only beginning to recover, further affirming the notion that will someday read like a line in a history book, that this was, is, and always will be one of the most horrible terrorist atrocities to ever pl ague our country. Terrorism has long been a global issue for centuries it has gone(a) on around the world. People with imperialist hopes for world domination often use acts of act of terrorism to scare smaller countries into support and subordination of the greater entity. Also, terrorism is often used to personify the hatred of one country for another. Burleigh Wilkins, who authored the piece, Can Terrorism Be Justified?, raises the issue of whether acts of terrorism are ever virtuously justifiable, and utilizes situations where a large number of people share guilt for a tragic situation, in what is known as collective guilt. According to Wilkins, terrorism is all act of violence against a group a people, whether they are the attackers or the victims of the attack. The answer to the title of the piece lies not in the definition of terrorism, but in the delineation of whether or not a terrorist act is justifiable. Wilkins uses this maxim It is generally agreed that it is justifiable to do violence to another person in self-defence some wars can be accommodated under the category of self-defense where this is construed in terms of a community of persons defending themselves against aggressors. Wilkins says that if we condemn partial wars or unjust acts in wartime, then we also condemn terrorism where violence (or the imminent threat of

Who Do We Think We Are? :: essays research papers fc

1Who Do We Think We Are?Capital Punishment is the penalty of death for a crime. The most common criminals who are penalise are convicted murderers. What message is that sending? The use of pileus penalty sends the message that murder is okay, as long as it is applied to the right person. The application of pileus punishment in our society is hypocritical. It has no place in the judicial system. The way we handle the punishment of capital crimes is pathetic There are other(a) ways to punish criminals outside of taking their lives, but we, for some reason, feel the need to play the exterminator. The people who commit capital crimes are not animals to be exterminated. They are human. They deserve the same breath that everyone else takes. If a person commits a heinous crime then that person is apparently not normal. That person is obviously in need of mental help and, we should help these criminals instead of hurting them (religioustolerance.org). Criminals have families and frie nds who care about them. Why should the innocent bystanders be punished because of anothers actions? cleanup anyone, for any reason, only brings on more pain and suffering than is necessary. We should recognize the capers in 2our society and heal those problems instead of placing a temporary capture on a permanent problem. Capital punishment is excessive and unnecessary. Killing a criminal only solves one problem and causes many more. The one problem it solves is the criminal is no longer walking the streets. Encarceration would serve the same purpose. If the criminal is encarcerated then he/she no longer poses a direct threat to society, so killing him/her would be overkill (pardon the pun). It causes other problems because the criminal was executed merely out of retribution. Sort of an eye for an eye. Actions like this only keep hatred and condemnation flux in society (progress.org).A punishment can only be called a deterrent if it is performed consistantly and promptly. Ther e are three reasons why capital punishment cannot be performed with any consistancy or promptness.1) The number of convicted murderers sentenced to death are small, and of that number, an even smaller number are actually executed2)Manditory death sentences are unconstitutional (Woodson v. North Carolina, 1976).3)A considerable time between the imposition of the death sentence and the actual execution is unavoidable. If a person is going to premeditate a capital crime, he/she is not going to be

Agent Orange :: essays research papers

Agent orange was an herbicide used in Vietnam. It was use to kill overgrow trees and shrubs that were in the way of advancing United States troops. Agent orange got its name from the barrel it was transported in the barrel had a large orange stripe campaign across it.Agent orange was heavily used in fact, it was the virtually used of all herbicides in Vietnam. From 1962 until 1971 over 20 millions gallons were used to cover a large 6 million acre area. The most heavily covered areas were those where very thick brush was present it would give the enemy cover, as well as hindering the troops ability to move. The areas were located in South Vietnam, the transportation areas of Laos and Cambodia, and the forests of the demarcation zone.Agent orange, along with its br differents, Agent White and Agent Blue, did a spacious job clearing away the brush. It did this with severe costs people exposed to Agent orangeness have had many problems. Before you know what Agent Orange did to people , you have to understand what it was made of and how it worked. Agent orange contained a compartmentalisation of many plant hormones, which would confuse the plants metabolism and cause the plants to lose flowers, leaves and fruit within two to three weeks. Not only did it have bad effects on plants, it did things to humans, especially the ground troops who carried it and the airplane crew that dropped it.Dioxin, what was created in the mixture of hormones, has been proven to be very dangerous and poisonous. In lab tests, Agent Orange has given animals cancer and causes birth effects. This is also thought to be admittedly in humans, as many veterans complain about things like cancer, birth defects, liver infections, tumors, elevated blood pressure, blood deficiency, enlarged head, club feet and many other illnesses. Although it hasnt been proven 100% sure that Agent Orange is the cause for this, it is the one linking factor for all the people involved. The United States governme nt has handled this outbreak quite a well, in 1978 the Veterans Administration set up the Agent Orange Registry program. This allowed concerned veterans to enroll in a program that would test them for all cognize effects and allow them to seek treatment. The Agent Orange story is not over yet, in 1994, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) found that the level of dioxin was not high, and most people could tolerate it well.

How Do the Literary Devices Construct Meaning in “the Visit”? Essay

Imagine how dull a Shakespearean play would be without the ingenious literary devices and proficiencys that contribute so much to the fulfillment of its subscriber or viewer. Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, is a tragedy that combines fact and legend to tell the story of an eleventh vitamin C king. Shakespeare uses numerous types of literary techniques to bring up this tragic play more appealing. Three literary devices that Shakespeare uses to watch Macbeth more interesting and effective are irony, symbolism, and imagery. oneness technique that Shakespeare uses is irony.Verbal irony is when a character says one thing but means the opposite. When a reader understands the irony of what a character is saying, then he can truly understand the nature and intentions of the character. An grammatical case of verbal irony is when Macbeth says to Banquo, Tonight we hold a solemn supper, sir,/ And Ill request your presence (Macbeth 3. 1. 13-14). The reader soon discovers that Banquo never makes it to the banquet because he is brut onlyy murdered by order of Macbeth. Shakespeare also uses situation irony. This occurs when the results of an action or event are diametric than what is expected. An example of situation irony occurs when Macduff talks to Malcolm and discusses the tragedies that are taking place in Scotland. Without knowing that his own family has been slain Macduff says, Each new morn/ mod widows howl, new orphans cry, new sorrows/ Strike heaven on the face (4. 3. 4-6). Ironically, Macduff comments about widows, while he is completely unaware that he is a widower himself. Irony, a key element to a tragic play like Macbeth, has the ability to make the tragic hero appear more villainous or the down-fall reckon even more tragic. The second type of literary device that Shakespeare uses in Macbeth is symbolism. The predominant symbol is blood and is utilise as an effective method to fall upon the theme of the play. Not only does blood symbolize bra rattlin g, it is also a means of showing fraud and treason and probably most importantly, guilt. One example of bravery occurs when the captain says, For brave Macbeth? well he deserves that name/Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel,/Which smoked with bloody execution(1. 2. 16-18). Soon after this blood changes into a representation of treachery and treason. brothel keeper Macbeth asks the spirits to Make thick my blood,/ Stop up th access and passage to remorse (1. 5. 43-44). She asks the spirits to take away compassion and make her remorseless for the actions she is about to take. Also, when Ross asks, Ist known who did this more than bloody deed? (2. 4. 22), he tries to figure out who performed the disloyal act of murdering the king. Blood is also used many times to express the guilt-ridden consciences of the characters. For instance, Macbeth says, What hands are here? Ha They pluck out mine own eyes /Will all great Neptunes ocean wash the blood/ Clean from my hand? (2. 3. 58- 60). Macbeth obviously feels guilty for killing Duncan in cold blood. Later in the play, Lady Macbeth reveals her guilt while sleepwalking. She walks through the castle carrying a candle. She often sits the candle down and begins to rub her hands as if she is trying to wash them. In her dingy state, she cries outWhat need we fear who knows it, when none can call our powr to accompt? Yet who would puddle thought the old man to have so much blood in him? (5. 1. 38-41). Lady Macbeth feels as though she cannot wipe clean her blood stained hands. This is a bit ironic since earlier she told Macbeth, A little water clears us of this deed (2. 2. 66). Lady Macbeth has many dreams and fantasies about blood, which shows that she cannot clear her conscience of this brutal act. Another literary technique that is used in Macbeth is word imagery. Word imagery is a term for a metaphor, a comparison that does not use the words like or as. One of the best examples of this is clothing imagery. For in stance, Ross tells Macbeth that he has been named Thane of Cawdor, and Macbeth says, The Thane of Cawdor lives. Why do you dress me in/ Borrowed robes? (1. 3. 108-109). Macbeth asks why Ross is telling him this. This gentle is like new clothes to him, but this title and these clothes should still belong to the former Thane of Cawdor. Another example of clothing imagery occurs when Macbeth tells his wife that he has second thoughts of killing Duncan. He says, I have bought/Golden opinions from all sorts of people,/ Which would be worn now in their newest gloss (1. 7. 32-34). Lady Macbeth thinks he is being irrational. Macbeth knows that he is the center of precaution now because he saved the country. He also knows that if he kills Duncan everyone would be more interested in the death of their king than in their hero, Macbeth. Shakespeares work reveals that he knew how to make a play a work of art. Through his use of irony, symbolism, and imagery he is able to grab the reader or the viewers attention and keep it.These elements have contributed to the endurance of his works for centuries, and they will help it to endure for centuries to come. Without the use of these techniques, Macbeth would not be the tragic play that it is. This play would lack very important methods that help idealize the characters in the play.

Six Sigma Methodology – DMAIC

Introduction to six-spot SigmaIn the sure scenario of planetary competition, the quality, abilities and cognition gives a competitory border to an presidential term over other administration. It is now an ecumenic truth that the cease sheet of an administration comprises of end to go universe category depositr. Six Sigma systemological analysis is renowned to gain these above mentioned ends. The administration that has potency to acquire clients delighted by supplying good quality merchandises and services has the possible to rule over other administrations ( Snee RD, 2004 ) . Harmonizing to General Electric chief executive officer Jack Welch, Six Sigma is the most ambitious and potenti tout ensembley rewarding enterprise we have of all time undertaken ( Breyfogle, 1999 ) . The initial flicker of Six Sigma started in meeting place industries and hints of its application can be traced out in fiscal services, health c atomic number 18 ( Snee, 2003 ) .The Six Sigma attack is a self-opinionated attack which follows a pre delimit nerve tract to better the appendage capacity. Six Sigma methodological analysis is a statistically ground attack to minimise fluctuation on that pointfore cut downing defects. statistical re unveiling of Six Sigma shows the spread of the map over a predefined graduated table demoing how good a procedure is executing. Six Sigma methodological analysis focuses on processes . Expected result of a procedure has a step called Mean . Expected result of a procedure has some fluctuation in it. Sigma item is step of that fluctuation ( Kaushik, et.al. , 2008 ) . It is deserving observing that Six Sigma has got some fuel left in it and it is still constructing impulse with any grunge of allowing up ( Hoerl, 2004 ) .Six Sigma novices as a lodge in ar redactment and ends with top-down execution, ensuing in impact on net incomes if successfully implemented ( Salzmen et.al. , 2002 ) . Six Sigma purpose is to accomplish 3.4 defects per million receives ( DPMO ) with merely one premise i.e. the procedure average displacement by every bit much as 1.5 standard divergences off the mark ( Walters, 2005 ) . A individual defect chance is a procedure failure that consequences in critical to quality issue to client ( Linderman et.al. , 2003 ) . Harmonizing to Voelkel et.al. , ( 2002 ) , Six Sigma blends repair direction, fiscal and methodological elements to do betterment in procedure every bit good as merchandises. Harmonizing to Tomkins ( 1997 ) , Six Sigma is a plan aimed at the close censure of defects from every merchandise, procedure and dealing.Sig Sigma provides a tract to implement cultural alteration throughout the administration. Large companies are happening six sigma methodological analysis recyclable in development of integrated concern programs. Business program developed utilizing this methodological analysis rules go away take to single projections to better the person processes which impart hold impact for the company. Both facets acts as a accelerator for cultural alteration and will reflect an individuals attempts straight over the corporate aims.Six Sigma is a information driven and structured programme that works at a companys foundation to steer its room towards reservation operational excellence ( Darshak, 2008 ) . Six Sigma is an integrating of statistical thought and statistical technology into an bing system of technology application ( Shung et.al. 2012 ) .THE SIX SIGMA METHODOLOGYSix Sigma is based on DMAIC methodological analysis which is an acronym for Define, circular, Analyze, Improve and Control, it contains a systematic attack to look into the procedure from get downing to coating of the procedure. Six Sigma is a systematic application to better procedure by using the power of different statistical tools which measures the procedures and analyses them to cut down the fluctuation from end product of that procedure ( Gaddam et. al. , 2005 ) .DMAIC comprises of quintet set ups with each detail holding its ain set of tools and deliverables. These pentad stages are shown in figure 1. The cardinal procedures and cardinal tools that are used in these five stages are shown in table 1.Figure1 DMAIC procedureThe Six Sigma practicians assess procedure public presentation utilizing Defects per million chances ( DPMO ) and sigma breaker point. The Six Sigma is a powerful concern scheme due to the tools used in this are holding direct linkage to concern aims and precedences. The procedure flow diagram of Six Sigma methodological analysis is shown in figure 2.Figure 2 Procedure flow diagram of Six Sigma methodological analysisDEFINE PHASEThe chief aim of Define sta ge of DMAIC is to descry the undertaking chance and to formalize that it possesses a breakthrough potency. It is desirable that the undertaking or procedure selected be of import to both client and concern. If the administration has developed its ain concern schemes, the job should be under any of the schemes. Different degree of administration has their set of ends to accomplish. At the managerial degree or top direction degree, the end is to accomplish high return on investing. At the operations degree, end might be to increase the production of the procedure. At the undertaking degree, ends might be to increase the productiveness by cut downing defect degree. One of the first points that sparks the induction of define stage is project charter. This is a papers that contains all the description of the undertaking i.e. range, start and finish day of the months, possible benefits to client, possible fiscal benefits to administration, squad members and their functions, and inside info rmations of any extra resources that will be expedient during the undertaking. The charter should besides turn to the customers critical-to-quality features ( CTQs ) that are impacted by the undertaking. The job arguing of the undertaking should depict the symptoms of the job non the antecedently cognize solution or possible causes. The squad should hold sufficient sum of members in it depending upon the undertaking. Each member essential make up his ain work at heart the clip provided for that work in the undertaking charter.Use of graphical tools is make in define stage some of the commonly used tools include pareto chart, histogram, pie chart, procedure flow diagram ( PFDs ) , value watercourse function ( VSM ) and SIPOC ( Supplier/Input/Process/Output/Customer ) diagrams. These tools provide ocular item and AIDSs in sagacity about what needs to be changed in the procedure. The squad will necessitate to fix an action program for the following stage of DMAIC i.e. Measure s tage. This readying must include single work assignments and probationary completion day of the months for the following stage. Before traveling to following stage, the squad demand to fix a revaluation points on which critique would be do. These reappraisal points must go to to these undermentionedDoes the job statement focal point on symptoms of the job?Does job statement contain possible causes or solutions?Does the undertaking has sufficient sum of fiscal impact?Have any obstructions come so far in the manner?A high degree SIPOC map completed or non?A procedure flow diagram completed or non?Proper justification do for undertaking choice or non?Is the teams action program for Measure stage of DMAIC rea callic?MEASURE PHASEThe chief aim of Measure stage of DMAIC is to measure the current province of procedure. All the informations needed during the undertaking is collected in this stage on steps of quality, cost and rejection of the procedure. It is of import to make the listi ng of procedure input variables and procedure end product variables. Process input variables and procedure end product variables must be carefully defined and measured during the Measure stage. One of the of import undertakings is to make up ones mind what and how much sufficient informations is needed to make thorough analysis and apprehension of current procedure. There is pick for informations aggregation i.e. historical informations and current informations. Sometimes the historical information may be deficient as the history can be uncomplete, methods for record maintaining alterations from clip to clip. The current information is holding the same system that is followed today and demand to be rectified. We can besides state the optimal method for informations aggregation is partly from historical informations and partly from current informations.Problem can be selected through historical informations and now farther current informations can be used for informations fiting and a nalysis. From Gauge R & A R survey, the per centum fluctuation for the procedure can be calculated. CTQs of the procedure are identified so that it will be easy to concentrate Six Sigma on countries that will take to greater client satisfaction. In this we have to set up valid and dependable prosodies to back up monitoring advancement towards the defined ends.At the terminal of Measure stage, the squad should update the undertaking charter if required, re-examine the ends and re-evaluate squad. The squad should include new members if they will be valuable in following stages of DMAIC. The squad can besides do few speedy wins extinguishing some non value added stairss in the procedure. The squad will necessitate to fix an action program for the following stage of DMAIC i.e. Analyze stage. Before traveling to following stage, the squad demand to fix a reappraisal points on which reappraisal would be done. These reappraisal points must go to to these undermentionedAre CTQ features ide ntified?Does Process input and end product variables are listed?Procedure capableness must be documented.Any premises, if any must be documented.Performance criterions defined or non?ANALYZE PHASEThe chief aim of Analyze stage of DMAIC is to reason the equally causes of the quality jobs, defects, rhythm clip. It is of import to sort causes in two ways i.e. common causes and conveyable causes. Removal of common cause is done by agencies of altering the procedure and remotion of conveyable cause is done by agencies of riddance of a specific job. The stage begins with benchmarking merchandise public presentation against the best-in-class so that new marks can be set.In analyze stage, statistical tools every bit good as conventional quality techniques like brainstorming, fishbone diagram, root cause analysis, hypothesis testing, procedure capableness analysis, design of experiment ( DOE ) , arrested development analysis, two sample t trial, one sample t trial, failure manners and conse quence analysis ( FMEA ) , graphical tools may be used for transporting out analysis. Process capableness analysis is done to mensurate the sigma degree and defects per million chances ( DPMO ) . One can easy happen out the available sum of chances for betterment in the procedure. These Analyze tools are used for both persona of informations collected i.e. historical and current informations in the Measure stage. These informations provides hints about the possible causes of the job. These hints have the possible to take to breakthroughs and place precise betterments. How the Theme of Kinship Is Dealt with in Macbeth

Shakespeares tragedy Macbeth contains an ellaborate exproation of the constitution of kingship. The main characters evil plan aims at overthrowing the current ruler and assuming power over Scotland. Based on this the playwright profoundly analyses which qualities are the most important in a king and the comprehend right of kings. Before carrying out his plot Macbeth weighed up all(prenominal) the reasons why he wanted to proceed with it and all the arguments against his terrible murder plan. One such argument is that this Duncan has been so clear in his capital office. Duncan is depicted as a wise ruler who feels strongly abou the security of his country in the ongoing war with Norway. However, our encounter with this noble man is very brief. Macbeth, at a time he became king, did not know how to rule a country. His major concerns are for his own safety and for te security of his own power. He doesnt steady consider the welfare of the Scottish people before going ahead with th e regicide. This shows that no matter how dedicated you are to your country, even as a great warrior and Bellonas bridegroom as an ordinary person you may not rule a country. This message is reflective of the prevailing belief in the divine right of kings that existed in Shakespeares day. Macbeth is not fit for the task with his Scotland is bleeding. The tyranny is reflected by the weather and bizarre supernatural events (pathetic fallacy). The playwrights use of wrangle in Macbeth is probably the brightest example of his ability to develop striking images. The enormous amount of heart-stopping gruesome references to blood and violence emphasise the consequences of the inadequate regime for which Macbeth is responsible. However, the get up of Avon not only condemns the bad ruler but he explores the good qualities that a king should possess. Desperate and helpless, Macduff arrives in England to see Malcolm, the legitimate successor to Duncans throne. Malcolm is almost an embodimen t of all the positive qualities of kings. He, along with his brother, immediately decide to rely on themselves to preserve their dynasty by leaving Scotland despite the obvious and inevitable hesitation that it raises and their own bereavement. They handle the situation with wisdom and courage, all for the sake of their kingdom. When Malcolm meets Macduff we see more of his wisdom. He adopts the personality of a man who is not fit to rein and not even to live. Malcolm makes sure to not jeopardise his own life and the welfare of Scotland by testing Macduff. Malcolm, unlike Macbeth, is able to tell appearance from mankind in his superiority as king. The main aspects high illuminate by Malcom that are absolutely incompatible with a decent king are lying, voluptuousness and greed. He plans to knap the nobles of their land, desire his jewels and this others house our wives, your daughters, your matrons and your maids may not fulfil the cistern of my lust. Satisfied with Macduffs rea ction Malcolm opens up All I am is thyne and mine country to play and admits that he is not ridden with vices are he pretended. We find out Shakespeares vision of king-becoming graces Justice, Verity, Temprance, Stableness, Bounty, Perseverance,Mercy, Lowliness, Devotion, Patience, Courage, Fortitude The return of the rightful king is marked by the delight of he army. Nature reacts positively when Malcolm returns.Macbeth, on the contrary, is full of bravado anf feels invincible one minute and then left thinking about all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death a poor player that struts and frets his hours upon the stage as Scotland, Lady Macbeth and his soul are all deteriorating around him. In conculsion, the theme of kingship is well developed in the play, with illustrations of the difference between a noble king and anoble man turned incompetent tyrant and the principles behind kingship.

Economics and ethics Essay

Describe the tension that exists in businesses today between economics and ethics. Do you think that there really does break to be a tradeoff between economics and ethics? What strategies can be implemented to avoid this tension? Provide examples and research to support your thinking. The version by Tima Bansal describes the back and forth tension of economics versus ethics. The article states, On the one hand, social programs come at an economic cost and firms should not need in activities that do not have a clear return. On the another(prenominal) hand, economic returns create social costs (Bansal, 2005). The author then harvest-feast to rationalise that this tradeoff between ethics and economics isnt necessary and that companies should find the overlapping space where activities are both financially profitable, and socially and environmentally responsible (Bansal, 2005)I agree with the author that companies need to be smart and make good decisions and it may take more effort , but if the effort is habituated the reward will be worth it. I dont think a tradeoff is necessary if the effort is put forth standardised in the examples the author gives. By having cross-functional team meetings or involving the shareholders through community involvement in the two examples provided, the companies were able to meet the middle ground and note their responsibility (Bansal, 2005).I work for a small company and every month a charitable organization is supported through donations and the company matches what the employees tin. I think its nice to have this involvement. With so many options, the company may have a tough time deciding on where it should contribute to society, but by letting the employees have a voice, they can openly affect those organizations that the employees feel would impact the most.Bansal, T. Leadership Theories and Styles Essay

Know thyselfAssuming that no one wants to work on a job that he or she dislikes, a person must have a clear understanding of what path she or he should follow in his or her business life. However, to choose a cargoner is a tricky business, if the chosen career is one that does non suit the person, then their personality is credibly to become confused which will lead to unhappiness and a feeling of being burned out.Settling down with the right career understructure be as central to your happiness as choosing the right person in a relationship. Nevertheless, with any relationship, there is no right or wrong answers, hence self-assessments tail end help to find a career that fits his or her personality because everyone is different, and every situation is unique.Self-assessments are tools to help a person to gain a better understand of ones personality, to increase the chances of becoming successful as well as a better person. According to the scores of the Self-Assessment of appr entice Hall, I am very charismatic, people oriented, well balanced in my trust towards others and I am seen as a trustworthy person. I can also use some(prenominal) improvement on my disciplinary skills as well as on my skills regarding building a leading team.LeadershipThe bear on in attractership has increased during the early part of the twentieth century. Early leadership theories concentreed on what qualities distinguished leaders and followers, while subsequent theories looked at other variables such as situational factors and skill level. There are several different approaches and theories behind a leaders carriage, following are some of which describe respective strengths and weakness as the case might beTraits Can be consistent with our perception of what leaders are, but this theory ignores the situational mount of leadership.Style What leaders do and how they act, but there is no clear relationship between style and performance outcomes.Situational The effectiveness of a leader depends on successfully diagnosing where subordinates are on the development continuum and adapting their leadership style as necessary.Contingency Matching leaders to appropriate situations, however this theory does not explain why individuals are more effective in some situations than others it also, does not explain what to do if there is a mismatch between the leader and the situation one faces.Path-goal Uses research on motivation to get organizational goals accomplished.Transformational leadership Involves values, ethics, goals and long-term goals, but this theory is seen as a personality sign sooner than behavior that people can learn. We see that leadership and its theories have been defined in many different ways, but there is no amend comment of how a leader must behave or how a leader can cover all possible situations what really matters is how useful the definition is for increasing our understanding of effective leadership.Equilibrium should exist in any e nvironment a balance of behavior and attitude, and the leader should lead by archetype and moderation. Studies show that subordinates perceived their supervisors behavior primarily in terms of two broadly defined categories labeled consideration and initiating structure (Yukl, 2006, p. 51), and as suggested by the Fleishman and Harris study, subordinates are usually more satisfied with a leader who is at least moderately considerate (Yukl, 2006, p. 52).Successful and effective leadership depends in part on how well a have it offr resolves role conflicts, copes with demands, recognizes opportunities, and overcomes constraints (Yukl, 2006, p. 13) but the main aim of leadership behavior, however, is to influence organizational members actions because it is through the behavior of the members that organizations goals areattained (Kanungo, 2001).My StyleI agree with Fiedler when he states the better the leader-member relations, the more highly structured the job, and the stronger the state of affairs power, the more make the leader has (Robbins & Judge, 2007., p. 410). A leaders behavior must adjust to reflect the task structure and major situational variables include the characteristics of followers, the nature of the work performed by the leaders unit, the type of organization, and the nature of the outside(a) environment (Yukl, 2006, p. 14).These thoughts make me relate to the situational theory to lead and manage a group, however my style of leadership fits into the participative leadership, where managers will use more group direction rather than individual supervision. This style suggests that team meetings are there to help facilitate everyones cooperation, and the managers role is to provide guidance and go for toward problem solving. However, use of participation does not imply abdication of responsibilities, and the manager will still be responsible for all decisions and its consecutive results.A Participative Leader, rather than taking autocratic decisions, seeks to involve other people in the process, possibly including subordinates, peers, superiors and other stakeholders. Often, however, as it is within the managers whim to give or deny control to his or her subordinates, most participative activity is within the immediate team (Straker, 2).Jobs that would fit well my styleI work for Apollo Group in the Information Technology (IT) department, as a Technical Support specialist, and currently do not hold a leadership position. If I have the chance to select a leadership position it would still be in the same area, yet managing projects and groups, where I could both, interact with people, which is one of my strongest skills and as well as work in an area where I do possess a large knowledge. Because I also believe in leading by example, I consider that more than asking or to assign a task, and as a leader can many times show how the work can be done and the rewards for thededication and self-motivation you mystify into the work.In that approach, some of the meetings known in my company as a One x One which would be used to emphasize how the person can improve, to get more knowledge or to further his career within the team or company, instead of the sole pursuit of correcting behavior. I also sound off that you can keep a good and healthy environment when you see in your leader the disposition to keep moving forward with an open approach, til now when the situation is stressful.Projects, when used right, are considered motivating and helpful in order to keep people engaged. In this scenario, I would choose people who are will to embrace new experiences quite often and, who, would accept the changes and innovations of the technological field, which by its own nature is a constant. What for me is the great part of this process, is that people can manage themselves once you set clear goals and can keep up with metrics, allowing each individual to have more freedom in the work environment. I could focus on organizing, supporting and developing the people (Luis, 15) in the leaders team position, without forgetting, or also balancing with another style which I lease to improve, which is a more task oriented leader.ReferencesLuis, M. John M. Barry and His Use of Rhetorical Strategies

Knowledge, the key to progress, has proven to be a human beings most powerful and significant weapon. We gain knowledge when we put our question to work at the problems we need to solve in life. It doesnt matter what we are trying to accomplish, whether it be creating a new technology or culture how to put together a puzzle, the matter of fact is that both request great examination and question to resolve and learn. Scientific research is a technique designd to investigate phenomena, correct previous understanding, and acquire new knowledge.Knowledge could lead us to a possible cure for cancer, an alternative for fossil fuels, and the earthly concern of a revolutionary technology. Nevertheless, all these benefits are a reason why John M. Barry writes about scientific research with admiration, curiosity, and passion in which he blends a use of rhetorical strategies in order to give off an overall perspective of the necessity and mystery in spite of appearance scientific resear ch. Foremost, John M.Barry creates the sense of impressiveness by describing unknown yet highly desired information that all scientists wish to obtain from scientific research, through the strategy of abstract diction where intension is implemented at its best. The word state of nature is referred to in the passage various times and its dictionary meaning is not whats really being discussed here. The wilderness John is referring to is the place where scientists must begin in every study in order to resolve or prove something. This is a place or in other words a moment where scientists have to take action and start guessing what is needed to do.The answer is never in the stage of the scientist, and before you notice it you must know where to look and how to look. Obviously, using the word wilderness creates the idea that the knowledge scientists are looking for is hard and hidden and it is a successful form of emotional appeal to characterize scientific research as secreted yet v ital. Following, through a successful form of a analytical appeal the writer draws an analogy that further embodies the obscurity of finding knowledge and the importance of scientific research. The author shoots to compare apples to apples when he puts stance by side a shovel to the experiments performed during scientific research. When a successful comparison is given between two subjects it creates an understanding to the reader of what the overall intended purpose is for both. two subjects compared here are meant to find an answer, or in the case of scientific research, knowledge. However, you must know what correct tool or experiment will find the answer. Its not easy, so a scientist must really put a lot of thought into what must be done and how it must be done to find the information and key data they need.In other words, the author explains how the success towards finding new knowledge is hidden deep within and can only be found if we understand step by step how were going to reach that data. Therefore, when the answer is not in the governance of the questioner it takes hard effort to find but when found its benefits are unmeasured. Preceding, John M. Barry is sure not to exclude the use of an ethical appeal in which he presents a carefully and edited argument to create the strong message that scientific research is important to succeed. In the beginning of the passage, it opens by explaining what inference and uncertainty is. Then it clarifies what it takes to be a scientist, what a scientist must do, what happens if a scientist succeeds in their work, and why a scientist may fail. The main focus of these points is based on scientific research which proves its importance in his point of view and how it can make or break a scientist. John makes it clear that scientific research is essential and is not as easy as following step by step. It takes time, dedication, and most of all determination. When someone is determined they will do some(prenominal) i t takes, especially thinking out of the box, to accomplish their goal. Overall, the essay was presented in a logical and comprehensible way that allowed the reader to understand how essential yet maybe hard it can be to use scientific research. Closing, the writer is successful in making his opinion and perspective towards scientific research through the use of logos, pathos, and ethos. The overall analysis brought me to the conclusion that the John M. Barry portray scientific research as the chief ingredient to putting together answers and information. Yet still, doesnt span the complexity of scientific research and thats its not straightforward as a scientist wishes it could be. Nevertheless, the benefits scientific research has brought along we see them everyday because of our overall packaging as a world. Didnt I say knowledge is our most powerful weapon? Well observe, for it has destroyed the slow and premature society humans once used to live in and created a beautiful, div erse, and intelligent culture today.

Florence Nightingale Essay

The Polar subject Diagrams of Florence nightingaleIf you read the article on Florence nightingale in The Childrens Book of Famous Lives1 you will not learn that she had to action with her parents to be allowed to study mathematics. If you read the Ladybird book Florence Nightingale2 you will not wear that she was the starting line fair sex to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. In looking virtually for an part of research I was intrigued to disc over that Florence Nightingale, who I always thought of as the lady with the lamp, was a competent Mathematician who created her own type of statistical plot which she used to save thousands of soldiers from needless wipe start. Florence Nightingale headed a group of 38 nurses who went to clean up the hospitals for the British soldiers in the Crimea in 1854. She fix that most of the stopping points were due to diseases which could be prevented by basic hygiene, such as typhus and cholera. Her improvements wer e simple that they had an enormous effect She and her nurses washed and bathed the soldiers, laundered their linens, gave them clean beds to lie in, and fed them3.When she returned to Britain she made a detailed declare to the Government specialiseting out what conditions were like and what needed to be make to reduce deaths in the hospitals. zip was done, so she tried again, making an different(a) statistical report and included in it three stark naked statistical plots to make entropy collated by William Farr more than accessible to people who could not get their minds around tables of figures. These were her icy surface field of view draws or rose diagrams, neartimes also known as coxcombs. The first showed how legion(predicate) men had died over the two years 1854-5, the plump for showed what proportions of men had died from wounds in battle, from disease and from other causes, the tierce showed how the degene outrank of deaths had decreased once sanitary im provements4 had been introduced. I trenchant I would try to act as the flake of these diagrams which is the most complicated and the most shocking. It is called Diagram of the causes of mortality rate in the array in the vitamin E. A copy of it is belowMathematics SL and HL t individuallyer condesc prohibit real1 showcase 6 Student motionFigure 1The basic ideas are very simple. The good-for-nothing area represents deaths due to disease, the red area represents death due to wounds in battle and the sullen area represents death due to other causes. I tried to find a copy of the data which this diagram represented, still I had no luck, so I decided to make sure I understood exactly how the diagram was made and to make my own recitation of some data which I did study to hand. erstwhile I tried to understand the diagram in detail I found there were some problems. The First ProblemI wasnt sure whether the black area in a variety such as this was supposed to bethis areaor this areaMathematics SL and HL t severallyer hold back textile2Example 6 Student drillIn other words, were the cogitation separate, or overlapping? The articles I read didnt make it clear. OConnor says that The area of separately color w pass on, measured from the centre as a greenness point, is in proportion to the statistic it represents5, which makes it debatem that all color are wedged figure of speechd, or sectors, so the burnishs overlap. However, Lienhard commented that in the November 1854 section battle deaths take up a very small portion of each cut of meat6, which makes it sound as though the slice has three separate portions, and Brasseur says that she also divided the areas within each of the wedges to show which portion of the mortality data for that month could be allotted to each cause of death4.I decided to construct polar area diagrams for a set of data with the colours separate and with the colours overlapping to match if putting theory into practic e would make it clearer to me. The data I used was taken from the IB grade distribution statistics for the historic 15 years at my own institution. I used the song fetching higher(prenominal) Mathematics, cadence Mathematics and mathematical Studies to be represented by my three colours. I took the old Mathematical Methods note to be the uniform as type Mathematics. To fit 15 sectors into the circle I needed each arc to subtend an angle of 2 radians at 151 2 the centre. The area of each sector would then be A = r 2 = 2 where r is the r 2 15 15 radius of the sector. Since the area needs to be proportional to the statistic, I needed to 15A and right used a photographic plate which would allow me to draw find the radius, so I used r =a reasonable sized diagram. To create a polar area diagram with overlapping sectors I retributive used this formula on each of the snatchs of students pickings the various options. dos winning Mathematics year on year Numbers (A) Higher St udies Standard 1995 1 24 0 1996 4 15 0 1997 8 10 0 1998 6 31 0 1999 9 17 0 2000 10 20 0 2001 4 31 1 2002 5 21 2 2003 4 15 4 2004 5 29 5 2005 1 28 0 2006 3 16 2 2007 8 13 0 2008 11 29 14 2009 10 23 15 universal gas constant ( r ) Higher Studies Standard 2.2 10.7 0.0 4.4 8.5 0.0 6.2 6.9 0.0 5.4 12.2 0.0 6.6 9.0 0.0 6.9 9.8 0.0 4.4 12.2 2.2 4.9 10.0 3.1 4.4 8.5 4.4 4.9 11.8 4.9 2.2 11.6 0.0 3.8 8.7 3.1 6.2 7.9 0.0 7.2 11.8 8.2 6.9 10.5 8.5Mathematics SL and HL teacher plump for material3Example 6 Student workI then used a geometric program (GeoGebra) to draw the sectors all with a common 2 centre, each with an angle of radians, and with the radii as given in the table. I drew 15 the Higher sectors first with the Studies on top of these, and the Standard on top of these. This was the result Figure 2 Polar area diagram to show students victorious Mathematics at one school (colours overlapping)Blue represents the go of students taking Higher Maths. Brown represents the number of stude nts taking Mathematical Studies. Green represents the number of students taking Standard Maths. The colours are not solid, so where colours overlap there is a different colour. The blue overlapping the brown makes a knock here, and the green overlapping the blue makes a darker green. In 2003 and in 2004 there were an equal number of students taking Higher and Standard so three separate colours cannot be seen on the diagram. Next I worked out the radii needed if the colours were not to overlap. For this I used cumulative areas to work out the radii. Brown represents the number of students taking Mathematical Studies. Green represents the number of students taking Standard Maths. This diagram is incomplete in that it has not got the dates on it, but I was interested in the basic shape it would make rather than seeing it as a finished article to represent the data. I decided to do the same thing but with Studies in the middle and Higher at the edge to see how different it would look.Figure 4 Polar area diagram to show students taking Mathematics at one school (colours separate)Blue represents the number of stud ents taking Higher Maths. Brown represents the number of students taking Mathematical Studies. Green represents the number of students taking Standard Maths. This feels very different. The blue section actually looks less significant, to my eye, macrocosm put at the edges. This made me think of something else I had read in Brasseurs article, Nightingale pose these colored areas so that the main cause of death (and the largest sections)deaths by diseasewould be at the end of the wedges and would be more easily noticed.4 I am sure that Brasseur thought that the colours were separate, and not overlapped. However, comparing my diagrams to Nightingales original in Figure 1, IMathematics SL and HL teacher support material5Example 6 Student workbecame sure that she did mean them to be overlapped. I noticed that in the lefthand rose in figure 1 (representing the second year) there is a wedge with blue at the edge followed by a wedge with blue at the edge Figure 5 A zoom in of part of figu re 1This can croak in a diagram like my figure 2 of overlapping colours, but would be out of the question if the colours are separate as in figures 3 and 4. From this I deduced that the colours on the diagram must be overlapping. The Second Problem My diagrams were unlike Nightingales ones in that the total area of the sectors in figure 2 represented the total number of students taking the IB at this school over the 15 years. Nightingales statistics were order of mortality. Basically they can be thought of as percentages of soldiers who died, but, as before, when I read through the articles again, I was unsure what they were percentages of. Gill and Gill have table (Table 2) in their article with headings No. of soldiers admitted to the hospital and No. (%) of soldiers who died3.This might suggest that Nightingale was working with percentages of soldiers who were admitted into hospital. Lewi is more defined and refers to the actual statistic of one wedge of the third of Nighting ales polar area diagrams as follows The mortality during the first period was 192 per 1,000 hospitalized soldiers (on a yearly basis)9. However, Brasseur refers to the statistic in a wedge of Nightingales first diagram as being the ratio of mortality for every 1,000 soldiers per annum in the field4, in other words a percentage of the force actually on duty. I decided to create a polar area diagram to act as an analogy to the possible situations as follows Nightingales data My data Number of soldiers in the array in a month Number of students taking the IB in a year Number of soldiers taken to hospital Number of students taking Maths Studies Number of soldiers dying of wounds Number of students gaining grade 7 Number of soldiers dying of disease Number of students gaining grade 6 Number of soldiers dying for other reasons Number of students gaining grade 5My analogy of drawing a diagram showing the numbers of soldiers dying as a percentage of those admitted to hospital would then b e the number of students gaining a grade above 4 as a percentage of those taking Mathematical Studies. I decided to do this one by hand, partly to prove I could, and partly to see if it would spend any extra light on the construction of the diagrams.Mathematics SL and HL teacher support material6Example 6 Student workI gathered the data, found the percentages and used the percentages as A in the usual 15A to find the radii needed to construct the diagram. The data is here formula r =Numbers gaining top three grades in Mathematical Studies As percentage of those taking Studies radius needed for each Taking Total Grade 7 Grade 6 Grade 5 Studies in year % grade 7 % grade 6 % grade 5 R7 R6 R5 1995 7 10 4 24 25 29.16667 41.66667 16.66667 11.80 14.10 8.92 1996 2 9 3 15 19 13.3333360.00000 20.00000 7.98 16.93 9.77 1997 1 4 2 10 18 10.00000 40.00000 20.00000 6.91 13.82 9.77 1998 5 12 11 31 37 16.12903 38.70968 35.48387 8.78 13.60 13.02 1999 2 6 7 17 26 11.76471 35.29412 41.17647 7.49 12. 98 14.02 2000 3 4 7 20 30 15.00000 20.00000 35.00000 8.46 9.77 12.93 2001 3 8 8 31 36 9.67742 25.80645 25.80645 6.80 11.10 11.10 2002 1 8 4 21 28 4.76190 38.09524 19.04762 4.77 13.49 9.54 2003 0 1 8 15 23 0.00000 6.66667 53.33333 0.00 5.64 15.96 2004 3 9 7 29 34 10.34483 31.03448 24.13793 7.03 12.17 10.74 2005 1 11 9 28 29 3.57143 39.28571 32.14286 4.13 13.70 12.39 2006 2 4 5 16 21 12.50000 25.00000 31.25000 7.73 10.93 12.22 2007 1 8 3 13 22 7.69231 61.53846 23.07692 6.06 17.14 10.50 2008 0 3 17 29 54 0.00000 10.34483 58.62069 0.00 7.03 16.73 2009 0 5 5 23 48 0.00000 21.73913 21.73913 0.00 10.19 10.19And the diagram came out like thisFigure 6 Polar area diagram to show percentages of students taking Mathematical Studies who gained grades above 4Red represents the number of students gaining grade 7. The purple areas represent coinciding numbers of students gaining grade 5 and 6.Mathematics SL and HL teacher support material7Example 6 Student workOne thing which I learnt from this exercise is that you have to be very careful about your scale and think through every move before you start if you dont want to fall off the edge of the paper It is a far more tense experience drawing a diagram by hand because you know that one slip will make the whole diagram flawed. A computer slip can be corrected before you print out the result. My hold for Florence Nightingales draftsmanship was heightened by doing this. The other thing which drawing by hand brought out was that, if you draw the arcs in in the appropriate colours, the colouring of the sectors sorts itself out. You colour from the arc inwards until you come to some other arc or the centre. The only problem came when two arcs of different colours came in exactly the same place. I got around this problem by colouring these areas in a totally different colour and saying so at the side. At this point in my research someone suggested some more possible websites to me, and following these up I found a copy of Nightingales second diagram which was clear enough for me to read her notes, and a copy of the original data she used. The first of these was in a letter by Henry Woodbury suggesting that Nightingale got her calculations wrong and the radii represented the statistics rather than the area.7 The letter had a comment posted by Ian petty which led me to an article by him8 giving the data for the second diagram and explaining how it was created. The very clear reproduction of Nightingales second diagram in Woodburys letter7 shows that Miss Nightingale wrote beside it The areas of the blue, red and black wedges are each measured from the centre as the common vertex. This makes it quite clear that the colours are overlapped and so solves my first problem. She also wrote In October 1854 & April 1855 the black area coincides with the red. She coloured the first of these in red and the secon d in black, but just commented on it beside the diagram to make it clear. The article by Short8 was a joy to read, although I could only work out the mathematical equations, which were written out in a way which is strange to me ( for sample $$ extArea of sector B = fracpi r_B23=3$$8 ) because I al plant knew what they were (The example had a sector B in a diagram which I could see had 1 2 2 2 = = areaB rB rB ). The two things I found exciting from this article were the 2 3 3 table of data which Nightingale used to create the second diagram, and an explanation of what rates of mortality she used. She described these as follows The ratios of deaths and admissions to Force per jet per annum are calculated from the monthly ratios given in Dr. Smiths Table B4 and I had not been able to understand the consequence of this from the other articles. (Brasseur adds that Dr. Smith was the late director-general of the army.4). Using Shorts article I was able to work out what it meant. I will use an example of data taken from the table in Shorts article, which is in turn taken from A contribution to the sanitary history of the British army during the late war with Russia by Florence Nightingale of 18598. In February 1855 the average size of the army was 30919. Of these 2120 died of zymolytic diseases, 42 died of wounds & injuries and 361 died of all other causes. This gives a total of 2120 + 42 + 361 = deaths. 2523 2523Mathematics SL and HL teacher support material8Example 6 Student work2523 81.6003 men died per 1000 men in the army in 1000 = 30919 that month. If the size of the army had stayed at 30919, with no more men being shipped in or out, and the death rate had continued at 81.6 deaths per 1000 men per month over 12 months, the number of deaths per annum would have been 81.6003 12 = 979.2 per 1000 men in the army. In other words 979.2 deaths per 1000 per annum. out of 30919 means thatThis understanding of the units used allowed me to final examinationly underst and why OConnor says of the death rate in January 1855, if this rate had continued, and troops had not been replaced frequently, then disease alone would have killed the entire British army in the Crimea.5 The number of deaths due to disease in January 1855 was 2761 and the 2761 average size of the army was 32393. This gives a rate of 1022.8 1000 12 = 32393 deaths from disease per 1000 per annum.Another way of looking at it is that if 2761 had dies each month from disease, 276112 = 33132 would have died in 12 months, but there were only 32393 in the army As an aside, I noticed that OConnor quoted the mortality rate for January 1855 as 1,023 per 10,000 being from zymotic diseases5. Another example that we should not trust everything we see in print. Having sorted this out I was ready to attempt my recreation of figure 1. I decided to do the right hand rose only, screening April 1854 to sue 1855. The following table shows the data taken from Shorts article in blue and my calculation s in blackAverage Wounds size of Zymotic & Z/S*1000*12 Radius W/S*1000*12 Radius O/S*1000*12 Radius (Az) (Aw) (Ao) for army diseases injuries Other for for Month (S) (Z) (W) (O) (1 d.p.) Nightingales original Diagram of the causes of mortality in the army in the tocopherol and my recreation. I have to admit that I felt rather proud once I had done this However, looking at the September 1854 wedge I realised that the two diagrams didnt correspond. In Nightingales original diagram I can see that there are more deaths from other causes than from wounds. In my version there are fewer deaths from other causes than fromwounds. All other versions of the original in other articles I looked at ( Gill and Gill3, Brasseur4, OConnor5, Woodbury7, Riddle10, Small11, Lienhard6) are as the original, but the table in Short definitely shows fewer deaths fro m other causes than from wounds8. Conclusion I started out to try to lean how to urge the polar area diagram which Florence Nightingale made to communicate to other people just how mediocre the situation was in army hospitals. This diagram shouts a need for reform. Look at it.The blue represents deaths which could be avoided with a bit of organisation and care. The red represents deaths due to the actual battles. Florence Nightingale had copies of her report containing her diagrams published at her own expense and sent them to doctors, army officers, members of parliament and the Queen. Following her persistent lobbying a commission was set up to improve military barracks and hospitals, sanitary codes were established and procedures were put in place for more set up collection of medical statistics4. It is a very shocking picture with a huge snowball of social change behind it. It has been an exciting adventure to drill down to a real understanding of its construction.Mathematic s SL and HL teacher support material10Example 6 Student workHowever, the biggest lesson I have learnt from this research is that you cant trust what you read. As I have argued in the main text, I am moderately sure that Brasseur thought the colours of the second diagram did not overlap4, I think OConnor got his death rates wrong for January 18555, and I think Short may have transcribed the data incorrectly for September 18548. According to Brasseur, Florence Nightingale cross checked her data and was regular about addressing objections to her analysis4. Everyone can make mistakes, and errors can propagate if we just quote what someone else says without looking for corroboration. I have been left with a desire to find out more about this tenacious woman who wouldnt let society mould her into a genteel wife. Also, if I ever get the chance, I would like to get a look at one of the 2000 copies of Notes on Matters Affecting the Health, Effiency and Hospital disposal of the British Army . Founded Chiefly on the Experience of the Late War which Florence Nightingale had published in 1858, to see the actual table of data and check the numbers for September 1854.Mathematics SL and HL teacher support material11Example 6 Student workReferences/Bibliography1.Duthie, Eric ed. Origins of Cold War Essay

The ratty War was one of the most important historical events in the demesne, which had created a great impact that is still felt within the international community. The join States and the Soviet colligation became the cardinal most influential and powerful forces during this era. The relationship between the two former ally was anchored on political, ideological and economic interests, which at the end of the Second World War came as threats wherein developed bitterness and argument for power over the years (Hoesel, 1992).The Cold War which has been referred to as the period of elusive peace prescribe that the United States of the States as the worlds leading hegemonic power, with the defeat and disintegration of the Soviet Union at the end of the war. The Cold War indeed has been a conflict involving former allies, United States of America and the Soviet Union due to the difference in political ideologies held by the two superpowers (Nosotro, n.d). The difference in politi cal ideologies caused the development of animosity and hostility between United States and the Soviet bloc. The United States having been supportive of capitalist economy clashed with the communist Soviet Union (Nosotro, n.d). Although there had been no direct confrontation between the two world superpowers, indirect confrontations among the United States and Soviet allies were enough to assess the impact of the Cold War.Economic, political and forces affairs of the two states and their allies underwent massive policy changes in order to keep abreast with the happenings during the Cold War. The arms race was one of the most important indirect military offensives that took place between United States and Soviet Union, both states trying to produce more sophisticated weapons ahead of the other. This in turn created a great impact on the two states economic and social services sectors (Kishlansky, 2005). As such, the political allies of both United States and Soviet Union were also af fected as both governments of the two states worked towards bedcover influences in less developed countries. The series of decolonization became rampant and emphasized in regions such as Asia, Latin America, Africa and Middle East. And as such, the conflicts brought by the Cold War were instantly shifted and transmitted within these areas (The baffling Peace The Cold War, 1992).ReferencesHoesel, F.V. (1992).
