Song Analysis We Didnââ¬â¢t Start the Fire by Billy Joel Essay
Every song has a story to tell, and some contain hidden stories or lessons, while others are completely blatant. In Billy Joelââ¬â¢s song, ââ¬Å"We Didnââ¬â¢t Start the Fire,â⬠he does not hesitate to be very obvious with what he tries to prove, which is how all of the events in his song contribute to one large fire. I chose to remediate Joelââ¬â¢s song because it spoke to me with historical context. When researching the song, I read a majority of the history behind it and decided to reflect upon it in a visual picture collage, combining a majority of the elements he mentions with pictures--all circled around a fire in the middle. I decided to also make red-dyed cupcakes reflecting the fire Joel speaks of and ice them with a flame, yet placing an X over it,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Not all collages involve all of those elements, but any one of those can be used by itself. I found ââ¬Å"by adding a ââ¬Ëcollageââ¬â¢ an artist can change the nature of what he or she is creating, providing a new dimension for a work of artâ⬠(Stern 1). A collage, in my opinion, is a great way to grasp the concept of Joelââ¬â¢s song. Collages allow the viewer to see the art from a different point of view, and ââ¬Å"seeingâ⬠a song can help the person to actually see what Joel was trying to prove. In this project, I used pictures of almost every historical perspective he mentioned in his song, and circled all of those elements around a picture of a flame in the middle. I chose to do this because the flame is the ultimate theme of the song, and all of the events and people he is singing about contribute to the large fire that begins to grow due to all of these events combined. Along with placing the flame in the center, I matted it on an orange paper, unlike any of the other pictures, to help it stand out, since it is the main theme of the song. For those who have a difficult time learning without pictures, this is a great way for them to see all of the aspects of Joelââ¬â¢s song together on one page. Music industry report free essay sample
The music Industry is dying. At least, this Is the common expression among music businessmen. The availability of music for cheap prices and the abundance of Illegal downloading have effectively crippled traditional music sales. While its true that the Internet has dramatically debilitated the traditional institutions that dominated the music industry, the Internet is actually aiding music as a cultural institution by transforming it from its flawed past to a brand new structure. -http:// www. Delicateness. G/how-the-lenient-ls-helping-the-music-landlers-will-Johnson/ The music Industry we are all familiar with starts with record labels, and the Introduction of the internet has broadened the potential for artist to create their own career without signing themselves to a major record label, and potentially spoiling their possibilities. Record companies dominate the traditional music Industry. Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, and others were established as a result of sole proprietorships that were known as talent agencies in the sasss and 1 asss. Since these proprietorships were small in size, if an artist or group produced an album that did not sell well, the labeling companies would be forced to keep promoting their artist because other clients were harder to find due to competition among labels. Steve Chapel and Rebel Grafton, Rock n Roll Is Here to Pay: The History and Politics of the Music Industry (Chicago: Nelson-Hall, Bibb 46.Over the past half-century, some of these labels were either combined or purchased by other corporations. In turn putting only a few major corporate giants in control of music promotion. The corporations would loan money in order to pay for these entrepreneurial institutions, but they later found themselves in debt from all of the labels they had purchased. This then caused the corporations to fire the talent agents and entrepreneurs that brought these companies to tuition to begin with.Eventually the only people controlling, discovering and promoting talent were the large Incorporated record labels. These record corporations dominated almost every aspect of music production. In order for an artist to become successful, they would need to sign a contract with one of these companies. These are commonly known as record deals, and without the promotion value of one of these corporations a group would have very little chance of achieving widespread popularity for themselves. Thus, the record corporations became the arbiters of taste for the music scene. In fact, they even had direct control over what songs are played on public radio stations, so the only music that was being exposed to the masses was room signed artists. Mark J. Percival, Music Radio and the Record Industry: Songs, Sounds, and Power. Popular Music and Society 34. 4 (201 1): 460. If a company did not like the way an artist sounded, they were not re-signed. If they did like their sound, a record contract would be negotiated.A new performer has relatively little bargaining leverage over the companies; hence the first contract that is signed Is monetarily unfavorable for the performer. The most common form of contract would Include an capital or risk capital. Sums of money as large as $100 million have been given to ammos artists to write and sell a set number of albums, These albums are then produced, promoted, and sold to the public. Ere danger for the artist lies in how many albums they sell. The investment capital given to them by the company is based off of a projected number of sales. If the actual amount of sales is lower than this amount, then the artists owe the record company a portion of the investment capital. This puts the artist in debt, and in order to pay it off, the artist will be forced to sign yet another record contract and try to sell even more albums the second time around. After Maria Carrys album Glitter failed to meet its enormous projected sales amount, MI Music canceled her contract and she found herself owing close to $72 million to the record company. -MI Drops Maria Carrey, BBC News, wry. BBC. Com, 23 Jan. 2002 (accessed 25 Par. 012). Thanks to her previous success she was able to overcome the loss and continue her singing career, but should something like this happen to a newly signed artist, their music career could effectively be over. Oftentimes the company drops an artist, and because of the contract agreements the artist cannot make music for anyone else. He entire system is therefore based off of the revenue earned by the record companies. The performers main goal becomes keeping the record companies happy because they will only make money once they pass the projected album sales figure. This is a fundamentally flawed system because the artist represents an equal if not more important aspect of the music industry, and the traditional system exploits them. In order for this system to change in the musicians favor, a drastic reconstruction of the industry must take place. Theirs is still a deeply troubled business. Since 2000, when online file-sharing took off, global recorded-music sales have fallen from $26. 9 billion a year to $15. 9 billion, according to the IF, a trade group.Apple has helped to smash profitable albums into less profitable singles. High-street music shops are closing. Digital outlets such as tunes are not growing nearly fast enough to offset the decline in CD sales. Indeed, in many countries they are stuck in a niche. In Japan, 73% of spending on recorded music in 2010 was on CDC, DVDs and vinyl. Fewer than one- fifth of Britons bought digital music last year. Streaming services such as Spottily, Inch make money from advertising and subscriptions, are not yet helping much. Hey brought in Just 3% of total recorded-music revenues last year, according to the Pl, which represents British record labels. The new products unveiled by the Great Turtleneck One this week should push the digital market out of its niche. Apples Cloud is not Just a storage locker for music. It will search devices for tracks purchased from the tunes store, and automatically give customers the rights to download the music to any Apple device. That puts Apples service ahead of recent offerings by Amazon and Google.

Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Micro economics issues facing the company The major micro- economics issues facing the company include but are not limited to the following: taxation policies, growth, and inflation (Bardhan Udry 1999). Taxation policies and legal requirements Taxation policies may be described as the various rules and regulations set forth by a state, which regulates the taxation procedures in a country. Various countries will have different taxation systems. Taxation policies, to some extent, will determine the survival and sustenance of a business. Telecoms world plc has been largely affected by the changing trends in the taxation policies in the United Kingdom. The taxation policies changes in the United Kingdom have increased the amount of tax small businesses are supposed to remit to the government. Such, stringent taxation policies have increased the amount of expenses Telecoms plc spends in terms of taxes. This eventually reduces the companyââ¬â¢s net profit (Carson Hecht Thomas 2002). Also, the regulations regarding the telecommunications industry in the United Kingdom have made it hard for telecoms World to invest in more lucrative opportunities. Before being given the license to operate as an ISP (internet service provider), an organization is required to buy a license from the telecommunication regulatory agency in the United Kingdom. This license is too expensive, which makes it hard for Telecoms world plc to venture into such business opportunities. Growth Business growth can be described as the increase in business operations, profits, and clients. Such growth cannot be merely achieved through maintaining the status quo, but through embracing continuous improvement in a business. Continuous improvement will ensure that a business adopts the relevant technologies that will ensure the survival of a business in the current dynamic world (Carson Hecht Thomas 2002). Telecoms world plc is facing a challenge in terms of growth. The company has been recording a slight increase in terms of development. This can be attributed to the fact that telecoms world plc does not have enough money to invest in more profitable ventures that will ensure that the company grows in terms of investments, profits and clients. The following table indicates the percentage growth rate for the company in the last three four years Year 2009 2010 2011 Percentage growth 2% 1.2% 1% Inflation Inflation can be defined as the rise in the prices of commodities and services in a country. Inflation will also determine the purchasing power of money. Inflation generally weakens the purchasing power of money and currency in any country. Inflation also leads to hoarding of goods because; businessmen have hopes that the price of goods and services is going to increase (Mcconnell Brue Flynn 2009). The recently experienced global meltdown had an adverse effect on telecoms world plc. The company experienced low demand for its services and products during this period, wh ich eventually led to low sales. Also, the increasing rate of inflation has had adverse effects on companies. The increased inflation has increased the prices of telecommunications commodities and services, hence making it hard for consumers to afford such services. Also, the increasing inflation rate has led to some commodities being scarce and difficult to find. This has made telecoms world plc to have low sales returns (Mcconnell, Brue Flynn 2009). What the company needs to do in order to compete favorably From the above analysis, it is evident that, Telecoms world plc faces a stiff competition in the telecommunications industry. In order to overcome the various competition challenges, the company needs to develop a sound and viable strategy that will enable telecoms world plc stay at the forefront in the telecommunications industry in the United Kingdom. There are various measures that Telecoms plc can adopt in order to have a competitive advantage over its competitors. The fol lowing are examples of the strategies which can be adopted by the Telecoms world plc: Merging with bigger industries in the market. Providing high quality services to consumers Investing in advanced marketing techniques. Merging with other companies In order to compete well with its competitors Telecoms world should merge with the big players in the industry. Such a merger will enhance technological transfer between the two companies. Merging will ensure that both companies are able to share the various technologies, which will enhance efficiency in the organization. Also merging with other companies is important because Telecoms world plc will be able to share part of the other company benefits like a stable market, large clientele base and huge profits. Merging with other key players in the industry will also create a strong brand name for the company (Frank 1964). Provide high quality services and products Currently, Telecoms world does not provide standardized and high quality products and services. This is attributed to the fact that the company does not have enough capital to invest in state of the art technologies. From the analysis conducted, most consumers preferred other companies like orange, Vodafone and T- mobiles because they are offering high quality products and services. In order to sustain the competition pressure, telecoms world plc should adopt a quality management system that will ensure provision of high standardized and quality services. In order to gain the confidence of consumers, the company needs to ensure that, their customers are satisfied. The quality department will also ensure that there is efficient and effective utilization of resources in the company. This will also reduce the operating costs of the business (Pfeifer 2002). The quality department should also undertake some surveys in order to gather relevant information about what other players in the industry are doing. This will enable the company to adopt a relevant cont inuous improvement strategy. This will ensure that, Telecoms world plc produces goods and services which are far above the products and services produced by its competitors (Hoyle 2006). Invest in more advanced marketing strategies Marketing is the key to success in various businesses. In order for a business undertaking to succeed, the business should adopt extensive marketing of its products and services. Marketing will create a good brand name for the companyââ¬â¢s products and services. Also, marketing will increase the companyââ¬â¢s product awareness, and also increase the companyââ¬â¢s sources of revenue (Frank 1964). Marketing is multidimensional and will always involve activities like media advertisements, running promotions, running road shows, online marketing as well as direct contact with customers. The choice of a companyââ¬â¢s marketing strategy will depend on the available resources to undertake the marketing strategy. In order for Telecoms world plc to co mpete with its major competitors, the company needs to perform a market analysis. The market analysis should be geared towards studying of consumer trends and supplying the required products to consumers at the right time. One way to undertake such a market analysis is through the use of data mining technique. Data mining can be defined as the process of studying information stored in a database, with the aim of unmasking predictable trends which are not explicitly expressed by the database (Han Kamber 2011). Data mining is an effective way of understanding consumer behavior because it will provide an organization with the relevant information for decision making. For instance, Telecoms world can conduct a data mining tool in order to determine consumer consumption trends in terms of telecommunications products and services (Han Kamber 2011). For example, the company can invest in cloud computing data mining concept, for knowledge discovery. The company can find relevant consumer data on server logs and find out, which telecommunications services and products are preferred by consumers. The company can increase the supply of these products and services at the time they are highly demanded. Conclusion In conclusion, telecoms world plc operates in a highly competitive environment. In order to outwit its competitors, the company needs to invest more heavily in sophisticated quality management and marketing strategies. The company also needs to consider the option of merging with other key players in the industry. Reference List Bardhan, P Udry, C 1999, Development microeconomics, Oxford University Press, Oxford. voice recognition essays
voice recognition essays The future is here! Computers deciphering speech, cars commandeered by satellite and miracles of miniaturization are a reality. Are you ready to take advantage of this technology? Voice recognition along with these other new advances in technology are going to vastly increase the accessibility and function of personal computers. As viable working speech recognition software reaches the people the way we work with computers will be transformed. This hands-free technology will allow our words per minute to be dictated by our ability to express coherent ideas verbally, versus our typing skills. At first we may have to tolerate some clunky or limited command interactions but as the software evolves we can expect to see even greater accessibility for people of lesser computer skills. For those who use computers daily, hand held computers with voice input will increase their own ability to multitask. We'll soon be able to walk, talk, word-process and chew gum all at once. The miniaturization of technology is putting greater power in our grasp daily. The personal computer will soon be off our lap and in our palm. What used to take up the space of a desk may soon be no larger than a Walkman. This technology is bound to put a dent in your pocketbook, however we can expect that competition in the market will eventually lower prices. Advancements in heads up display, or HUD technology will further integrate the computer with our everyday lives. Developed early on for fighter pilots, the military now has a lightweight headgear unit for the foot soldier. This marriage of information at a glance and sustained interaction with the non-virtual world will be a breakthrough for ease of use in the civilian domain. If you thought Walkmans were annoying, we may now have to listen to the chatter of these people walking around with their computer headsets. Those with the latest in guidance and navigational technology in their automobi...

Aspects to the Priestly Cosmology of the Letter to the Hebrews Essay
Aspects to the Priestly Cosmology of the Letter to the Hebrews - Essay Example There are several chapters in the book of Hebrews that are primarily devoted to the early Christiansââ¬â¢ view of cosmos. One of the aspects of priestly cosmology in the book of Hebrews is found in the authorââ¬â¢s description of Melchizedek priesthood which the author largely considered to be raised by eternal life and is superior to Aaronââ¬â¢s priesthood (Heb.7.11-19). As the Melchizedek, Jesus was believed to have the power to rescue his people from the power of evil. The role of Jesus Christ is, therefore, to restore the true temple (Barker, 2004, p. 11). Another possible aspect of priestly cosmology in the epistle is the imagery of the temple. Throughout the book, there are a number of instances where various practices in the temple such as the offering of sacrifice are described. Incarnation and resurrection are also presented as some of the ways through which human beings can become divine and move to the eternal world which is believed to be the true temple. Scholar s agree that the aspects of cosmology depicted in the book of Hebrews fit well in the world of the first century. For example some of the elements of cosmology contained in the Epistle include the description of the metaphysical dualism between the natural world and the highest heaven. Scholer (1991, p.17) also concurs that the Epistle was generally meant to exalt Jesus Christ as the high priest and son of God. The contemporary view of cosmos is, however, based on the todayââ¬â¢s astronomical understanding of the universe, rather than the on the aspects of priestly cosmology found in the Letter to the Hebrews. This paper discusses the various aspects of priestly cosmology in the Epistle of Hebrews, its comparison to the contemporary world view of cosmos and the potential insights which can be used in teaching Christianity faith. Comparison between priestly cosmology and the contemporary view of cosmos Cosmology is generally concerned with the origin, organization, structure, as w ell as the beauty of natural laws that ensure order in the universe. The contemporary view of cosmos is based on the todayââ¬â¢s astronomical understanding of the universe, rather than the on the aspects of priestly cosmology found in the Letter to the Hebrews. As opposed to the first biblical view that the earth and heaven are the center of the universe, several discoveries have proven that the sun is the center of the solar system and the vast cosmos. On the other hand, the theological view of cosmos depicted in the Epistle of Hebrews is based on the belief that God is the maker of the universe and Jesus is seen and his true manifestation (Hughes, 1997, p.45). Jesus Christ is seen as the perfect son of God and is the source of salvation to humanity. The book also highlights the first centuryââ¬â¢s understanding of cosmos with regard to God controls the universe. Throughout the letter to Hebrews, Jesus is depicted as high priest, son of God; everything brings out the aspects of the beginning of the universe that is from creation to the eternal end (Bruce, 1990, p.79). Irrespective of the views attributed by individuals in the modern world, it remains clear that there is a spiritual being that ensures order in the universe and to whom we all attribute our origin from. Science alone has failed to explain this and in the context of spiritual wellbeing, this is God whom Christians put their faith

HP Case Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
HP Case Paper - Essay Example HP also laid emphasis on differentiation, constant change, and creating a brand family, as well as offering additional services and accessories. For price, HP has introduced a wide range of competitive pricing based on the differentiation of products. This has seen an increased margin for retailers and wholesalers through the bundling of accessories and services (Kotler 394). For the promotion element of the marketing mix, HP, over the years, has focused more on the creation of a brand identity on the company and products. Thus, they changed their strategy to pull based from push based, with greater spending implemented on sales promotion and advertising (Kotler 391). Finally, for the place element, HP has begun to offer better terms of payment, as well as bigger quantity on discounts for the dealers. Because of the improved relationship with the dealers, HP has increased its number of full time retailers to 750 from 350, as well as stocking additional 1050 dealers for a portion of t heir line. Discuss two concepts covered in the chapter that best relate to this case and how? Social marketing is the adoption and adaptation of processes, institutions and commercial marketing activities as a way to induce behavioral change among the target market on a permanent or temporary basis in order to achieve its social goal (Kotler 395). It involves the induction of an approach of leadership, which involves deliberate use of persuasion and influence to move the target market to a course of action that is more specific. For the social marketing concept, the company should consider the long-term interests of the society and consider the needs and wants of the customers. HP has given its commitment aimed at drastically cutting down their impact on the environment. HP has managed the impact of its energy needs via the calculation of GHG emissions, which their daily operations produce through their use of electricity and by their daily operations. The selling concept is the not ion that the customer will not buy something automatically but, rather, it needs to be sold to them (Kotler 396). This means that a persuasive sales assistant or advert that tells the customer of the ways the product will alter their lives, which could make them buy a product that they do not desire. The consumer will not purchase enough products from the organization until they undertake promotional selling. Consumers are inert and require goading to buy through conversion of their inert need to a purchasing motive via selling and persuasive action. Hp understands the wants and needs of the customer and, therefore, customers will not purchase their products unless they are promoted and sold. Hence, HP has placed increased focus on the creation of sales transactions by conducting regular promotions, which are aimed at attracting customers, as well as increasing the truncation of sales. Which of the sales force structures described in the text best describes HPââ¬â¢s structure? HP utilizes a separated consumer sales force as its sales force structure. In decentralized organizations, field sales managers carry out the everyday operations of the organization, as well as shouldering responsibility for their sales staff performance (Kotler 392). The sales force also consists of a mixture of specialist generalist salespersons. However, the employees do not make all of the companyââ¬â¢s sales; the companyââ¬â¢s sales force structure utilizes home-based telemarketers. They also have independent sales agents on contract who conduct their sales in particular geographic areas. What are the positive and negative aspects of HPââ¬â¢s new sales force struc

Organizational Behavior Essay Example for Free
Organizational Behavior Essay The role of organizational behavior in project management empowers the project leader to effectively diagnose situations related to the project for appropriate action and performance. The organizational behavior is a critical aspect to assist the project manager in accessing the particular skills of the team members within a functional organizational matrix (George and Jones, 2005). The understanding of organizational behavior from a project managerââ¬â¢s perspective presents an in-depth conceptual, technical, decision making, and interpersonal skills that are required to successfully manage complex project teams. Analysis on Organizational Behavior That Impacts Project Management The challenges in projects can create multiple tasks to reaching the goals outlined in the project scope. For instance, the team formation process is detrimental to moving through phrases of forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning in order to reaching the completion of the project. The project management primary role in understanding the functional project organization assists in identifying the organizational behavior within the context of team building to successfully moving through the phrases (Mantel, Meredith, Shafer, and Sutton, 2008). The project manager utilized the identified organizational behavior concepts of the team and the functional organization to apply appropriate human interpersonal skills for applied motivation, knowledge, decision making, change management, code of ethics, style of communication, and leadership direction. The interaction between the project manager and the project team are the stringent formed relationship that strengthens the communication matrix. The effort for sharing and receiving imperative information concerning the stages of the project tasks organizes the project for accurate reporting to stakeholders. Therefore, the organizational behavior presents a synergy to the effective communication matrix monitored by the project manager to assure that the channel is effectively being relayed by all individuals. The communication method determines the success of the project and defines the organizational behavior concept within the organization. Project managers must work with project teams through effective communication measures that reinforced the indentified organizational behavior concept (Hunger, 2007). In doing so, the expectations of the completed scope objectives are met as well as a formation of a productive project team. The skill of effective communication is the key to transferring the criteria of organizational behavior by demonstrating good decision making. The project managerââ¬â¢s decisions provide the organized efforts to staying on schedule and within budget with a human interpersonal skill approach that keeps the project team together. The decision making identifies the possible scenarios within the organizational behavior concept of the organization for a more direct approach to a problem. Respectively, the organizational cultures present a challenge for the project to moving in the desired direction. Therefore, the project managers must recreate their own organizational cultures within their project team environments that reinforced the specific scope objectives. In doing so, the demonstrated decision making to lead the project team is manifested from understanding the culture and securing a sufficient concept of the organizational behavior. The identified organizational culture within the project environment empowers the project manager in motivating the project team to strive for effective decisions. The organizational culture impacts the project team members for decision making during the process of completing the tasks for deliverables, in which, the organizational behavior detects how successful the channels of implementing changes and how issues are addressed. Therefore, the communication and culture defines the organizational behavior for the project manager to effectively and efficiently manage the special project. The transfer of information and delivering a clear understanding of the project needs essentially benefits all associated individuals to the progress of the team within the organizational culture framework. In the framework of organizational behavior, the attributes of effective communication and understanding the culture outlines the theory of motivation for the project manager to utilize in solidifying the team. The theory of motivation offers the project manager key concepts to implement to the project team for redefining the specific goals set forth from the project charter to the scope. The theory of motivation ranges from different thought of reason from theorists to apply a certain scientific approach, however, the fundamental approach is the model to connecting the team objectives with a purpose mindset amongst team members. Most employees need to feel the importance of the objectives; therefore, the project manager motivated communication tactics are critical for achieving the planned goals. The pursuit for a successful project is the normal functional operations of the technique of project management within the context of organizational behavior. The efforts of the three ââ¬Å"Câ⬠are communication, cooperation, and coordination that all work together in a synergistic approach to create a winning coalition with organizational behavior and project management. The three ââ¬Å"Câ⬠are essential to providing the means in allowing project management to function in a positive team environment. The goal of project management is to manage and complete the delivery of the clientââ¬â¢s deliverable on time and on budget. Therefore, the role of organizational behavior within the principals of project management is the ability to achieve the companyââ¬â¢s goals and mission in a strategic framework.

United States And The Summer Of Love History Essay
United States And The Summer Of Love History Essay The United States of America is a nation of pride, freedom, and culture. From the day the Declaration of Independence was signed, July 4, 1776, to present, 15 November 2010, numerous events have occurred that have shaped the lives, paths, and views of every citizen. The summer of 1967 in San Francisco, California was a summer that would never be lost in the eyes of the American public, and is a clear example of one of these numerous events. It was known as the Summer of Love. This summer was filled with new and different types of music, art, and literature which affected the U.S. as well as the world. This simple summer altered music within the American culture, freedom, choice, and trends in clothing, religious/life beliefs, the use of drugs, as well as the way people interacted with and treated each other. The Summer of Love was largely a part of the civil rights and antiwar movement, and as it developed it moved into the counterculture from which the Womens movement and Green move ment were developed (McCulloch). The economic markets for retailers as well as entertainers expanded drastically because there were so many new and popular trends and bands rising to the surface. San Franciscos 1967 Summer of Love had the strongest social, political, and economic impact out of all the events associated with the entire hippie movement throughout the United States, changing the people involved as well as the nation itself. The early 1960s was primarily when the hippie movement began. It mainly centered in the western part of the United States, mainly in San Francisco. The movement formed simply for the people who the behavior and values enforced by U.S. society (Home Front Turmoil: The 1960s, 288). It continued to expand greatly through multiple events during the 1960s, but the most influential event prior to the Summer of Love was known as the Human Be-In. The Human Be-In took place in San Franciscos very own Golden Gate Park just months before the infamous summer, January 14, 1967 (Layman, 322). Political liberation, ecological awareness, higher consciousness, personal empowerment, and other such ideals were what the event focused around. Various band and speakers from all around came out to promote their belief of questioning authority. Criticism and media attention was drawn after the event drew more than 20,000 celebration-craving hippies. More people began to migrate to San Francisco due to the w idespread news of what was going on (Perry, 9). For months prior to the Summer of Love, word echoed throughout the national media. Some college students who had read about the Human Be-In traveled to San Francisco during Spring Break to check things out. Others who were unable to make the trip then simply couldnt wait for the school year to be over, for the summer. Who knew that Haight-Ashbury District of San Francisco would be filled with more than 100,000 hippies only a few months later (1967: The Stuff That Myths Are Made of). The attendants consisted of mainly college and high school students, whom had just let out for summer vacation and eagerly joined in on the great movement they had been hearing about. A majority of the population whom attended the Summer of Love were part of the baby boom generation. During 1967, 20% of the United States population was made up of baby boomers between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four (Home Front Turmoil: The 1960s, 286). When the government tried to take advantage of the media and use it to prevent people from going, it simply persuaded people instead. These young adults saw an opportunity to meet up with people who shared the same ideals with them. Gain a chance to declare a new culture, and to create a new family among others of whom they were so alike. Many people purely just wanted to find freedom of both body and mind (1967: The Stuff That Myths Are Made of). A lot of changes and messages erupted from the Summer of Love, and the delivery of the changes and messages came in many forms. Potentially the strongest form of which was created was rock music. All around, the rock music scene consisted of more than just the music. It carried a new message, a new feeling, and new viewpoints. So many new bands and groups arose during this time simply because it was a time of change where people were so open-minded to the type of music and the protest-filled lyrics. Many well-known bands today were first discovered and heard at the Summer of Love. Some bands who were springing up were the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Country Joe, the Fish, and Jefferson Airplane (McCulloch). Other rock musicians whom this counterculture centered around were the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthric, and Joni Mitchell (Home Front Turmoil: The 1960s, 288 ). Before this summer, people were not nearly as open-minded, and music, especially rock, was not nearly as free. Many bands were inspired to break free from the norm and express their beliefs using their music after the album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band was released by the Beatles. The way the Summer of Love altered music was a huge social benefit (McCulloch). Not only was music punching for a change, but clothing, fashion, trends were also hoping to break free and create whole new life. In the years before 1967, London, England had the hippest fashion, and this was mainly because thats where all the strongest music and bands were located. When the center of music switched over to America, and the hippie movement told hold of teens and young adults, the trends followed and started becoming more and more popular. The teens of this era had enough power with their spending that it created a drastic boost in the United States economy. Females were starting to embrace Mary Quant style miniskirts and mini dresses, and although they were not allowed to wear jeans and pants to school, casual bell-bottom jeans began to creep into their wardrobes. Just like today, jeans were much easier to manage and more comfortable than dresses and skirts, plus they were cheaper and people wanted to use that extra money for more important things. Bell-bottoms were simply one item of clothing that every hippie possessed. Because it sort of went against the Establishment, hippies on the west coast started to lean towards the inexpensive indie clothing. The reason people loved this new movement in clothing was because they were able to get up and put on anything they wanted. Many common things that were worn by many of the trendsetting hippies included fringe suede jackets, southwestern Native American dresses, embroidered cotton shirts, bell-bottom jeans, angel wing sleeves, and leather fringe with beads (Gregoire). A lot of people also wore flowers in their hair as a symbol of peace and rejection of U.S. militarism and the Vietnam War. Hippies got their nickname flower children from this (McCulloch). This new look among the public was eventually spread throughout America, but was first sparked in San Francisco in 1967 (Gregoire). As trends with music and clothing seemed to grow exponentially, the recreational use of drugs was strongly involved in the Summer of Love. People were trying to find new ways and eyes to see the world through, and drugs were a psychedelic option which offered a whole new route towards enlightenment. The two main drugs were cannabis (aka: marijuana, weed, pot) and LSD (aka: Lysergic acid diethylamide, acid). The public found the naturalness of cannabis and the idea that LSD could expand the amazement and wonders of nature so appealing (McCulloch). LSD was used by 10 to 30 million people including members of the top bands during this time. A lot of the lyrics and styles of music were inspired by the use of drugs which created a symbiotic relationship. It has been presumed by many individuals that the John Lennons Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds off of the Beatles album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band refers to LSD, but Lennon in fact denies that there is any relationship (Matus). Bo th LSD and cannabis were illegal, but that definitely didnt stop anyone following the hippie movement. Soon speed (aka: amphetamines) became an epidemic. It was used as a supply for cannabis and LSD, so as the demand increased, they supply started to decrease. It altered peoples minds causing health and hygiene to deteriorate making it one of the most dangerous drugs of the time along with heroine which was used by and killed numerous musicians. The overuse and horrible effects these drugs had during the Summer of Love are reasons why these drugs are illegal today (1967: The Stuff That Myths Are Made of). During the 1960s people felt so trapped in what was going on, mainly with the war. Hippies were rejected by their families for being far from conservative. Politics became a huge role in their lives and in the movement all together. They made their beliefs and political views through musical shows, concerts, folk songs, peaceful sit-ins, and other simple things (Huber). The Summer of Love was a merely a demonstration of a political voice speaking through a peaceful way that everyone could understand. The Summer of Love occurred during a time when many historical movements were happening for the United States. One of the most prominent protests was against the war in Vietnam. Many families were losing their sons to the war because of the draft. Many believed it was unfair that they were being forced to fight for something they did not believe in. Although the United States was in fact winning the war by this point, the cruelty of the killing and the war in general were motives behind the Summer of Love. The Hippie counterculture embraced new music, clothes, psychedelic colors, and the entire anti war movement. St Francis of Assisi was one who loved the environment, animals, the sick and poor, and was against war. The Summer of Love really aimed to stress his principles. These ideals were incredibly strong, and are still carried out today by politicians who themselves contributed to the hippie movement during the 1960s and the Summer of Love in 1967 (Just a Season, but It Lives On) . Only a few years prior to the Summer of Love, Martin Luther King Jr delivered a speech, known among nearly all Americans to this day that demonstrated some of the ideals the hippies shared and long to share with others. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. Dr. King (American Rhetoric: Martin Luther King, Jr. I Have a Dream). The Hippies followed Dr. King because he was suggesting peace and unity, which was what people were searching for at the Summer of Love. It had a lot to do with politics of the war and politics in general. The United States economy was affected by many things such as the new music and trends that were sprouting out, but the economy for the West-Coast, primarily San Francisco, was affected drastically in other ways. As people poured into the city for the hippie movement, Human Be-In, and mainly the Summer of Love, there was a great boost in the economy. The amount of houses bought and rented increased largely as well as the amount of food and other essentials being purchased. While this was a great thing, there were many people who lacked money. This caused people to flood into the streets. People started begging for the things they could not afford, shelter, food, water, clothes. Crimes broke out because of the enormous amount of need people carried for things. They would try to stop traffic by jumping on car bumpers to get peoples attention. The police would have to intervene and sometimes would leave people badly injured, and sometimes have to arrest out of control hippies. More poli cemen were hired as the situation went more and more out of control which hurtful to the economy because the more hired, the more it cost (1967: The Stuff That Myths Are Made of). Drugs were another downfall for the economy. Dealers were making large sums of money, profiting off of drug-craving hippies, but they were the only ones. People were spending all their money to get more marijuana and LSD that they had no money left for food and shelter. The Summer of Love had a strong impact economically, even if it was both good and bad. The Summer of Love had its ups and downs, but altogether it upheld a bold meaning, and ended strongly. The amount of people migrating to San Francisco was continually increasing at an outstanding, nearly ridiculous rate. People started joining in on the hippie movement and the Summer of Love because it was becoming popular. The popularity of it was merely commercialism. It became a victim of commercialism which is the very thing it was trying to reject. It was now becoming possible to buy into the psychedelic lifestyle. They could no longer continue on with something that was falling into the hands of what they were protesting against (McCulloch). On October 7, 1967, they held a parade known as Death of a Hippie, symbolizing the end of the Summer of Love. People who were planning on migrating to San Francisco to join in were advised to stay home, and spread the love among the people there. Others who were already in San Francisco traveled to new places to spread the love and the hipp ie ideals. As the season came to an end, so did the Summer of Love. The Summer of Love is scarcely documented on paper and the internet compared to other events in United States History, but it is documented in every individual who was alive and had a strong memory during the time. Anything can be written down on paper, but the only way that any person can easily recall an event is if it had a strong impact upon them. I was able to locate different articles that all together gave me what I needed. It was as if each piece and each memory from every person was a puzzle piece. Socially, the Summer of Love impacted clothing and music drastically. Economically, it brought and took away great wealth from the United States. Politically, it influenced the way many politicians in our government handle situations in the present day. The innocence and the belief of goodness in people that was carried travels on today. People were encouraged to try new things and say things that would have never said before. The Summer of Love was flat-out beautiful Angela Alio to (Just a Season, but It Lives On).

Modularity in Development
Modularity is found in all facets of life and is very important in the biological development of an organism. Simon (1962)(in Gilbert, 7th ed.) argued that modularity is important in nature for the design and description of complex systems at all levels. He gave the example of two matchmakers to explain how modularity is important in the stable development of complicated system. Living beings are not composed of hierarchies. ââ¬Å"Each entity is an organized array of constituent modular parts, and at the same time, the constituent of a larger module.â⬠(Gilbert S., 7th ed.) These modules interact among themselves to form a larger coherent module. An evolutionary module is characterized as a unit that functions as an individual in respect of three processes of replication, interaction and evolution. (Lewontin (1970), in Bolker, 2000) One level in which modularity is clearly seen is in the later stages of embryonic development. According to Bonner (1988, in Gilbert 1998, pp.172), ââ¬Å"Modularity is associated with ââ¬Ëgene netsââ¬â¢ that can participate in many different aspects of development.â⬠This happens through discrete and interacting modules. Klingenberg has defined modules as ââ¬Å"units that are internally coherent by manifold interactions of their parts, but are relatively autonomous from other such units with which they are connected by fewer or weaker interactions.â⬠(Klingenberg, 2002) Modules are, therefore, said to be ââ¬Å"individualizedâ⬠units separate from their surroundings. Raff listed the characteristics of developmental modules in his definition. He said that modules must possess certain ââ¬Å"discrete specification, hierarchical organization, interactions with other modules, a particular physical location within a developing organism, and the ability to undergo transformations on both developmental and evolutionary time scales.â⬠(Raff 1996, qtd. in Bolker, 2000) He explained that modules are ââ¬Å"dynamic entitiesâ⬠which represent localized processes as seen in morphogenetic fields rather than ââ¬Å"simply incipient structuresâ⬠like organ rudiments. Modules are found to have external connectivity along with internal integration. So, modules allow for the three processes of dissociation, duplication and divergence, and cooption. (Raff 1997, qtd in Gilbert, 1998) Dissociation lets one module change without affecting other modules and that, in turn, permits heterochrony. Dissociation also allows allometry, letting different parts grow at different rates. The principles of duplication and divergence are seen in the variations of themes produced by morphogenetic fields. These are seen in different sizes and shapes of teeth, and the difference in hind limb and forelimb. Modularity also permits cooption, such that the same module can create both, jaws in fishes and mammalian middle ear cartilage. (Gould 1990, in Gilbert 1998) Modules can also undergo developmental and evolutionary change separately from other modules. The signaling interactions within modules over a distance are carried out by morphogens (Neumann, Kersberg, Ferguson, Gudon and Bouiillot, qtd.à Klingenberg, 2002) These are proteins of families like FGF, hedgehog, Wnt or TGF-?, or molecules like retinoic acid. These are termed as ââ¬Å"panacrineâ⬠factors. These factors stimulate the transcription factors in cells through the signal transduction cascades between them. This brings about a stimulation of a specific feature or factor in the cells in a module. Each module in an embryo makes a different level of a living entity. E.g. a cell is a part of tissue and organelles are parts of cells. Organelles must function to make a coherent cell and cells must function to make a coherent tissue. Modular units lets different parts of the embryo develop without interfering with other units. So development occurs through discrete and interacting modules. According to Keller (1986) (in Bolker, 2000), the best-characterized module is the dorsal marginal zone (DMZ) of the ââ¬Å"Xenopusâ⬠gastrula. It fulfills all the necessary criteria for a module. It can be physically isolated from the rest of the embryo and still undergo shape change, so it can be said that convergent extension is intrinsic to DMZ; the force-generating function is uniquely localized to DMZ; all cells within the DMZ interact to produce overall shape change; and lastly, this region can be identified in other amphibian embryos and related fish, like sturgeon. Other modules, apart from morphogenetic fields, are imaginal discs, like the wing imaginal disc of Drosophila; cell lineages like inner cell mass or trophoblast, insect parasgments, and vertebrate organ rudiments, somites, rhombomeres in flies, RTK-Ras or Wnt, or IP3 pathways are also considered to be developmental and evolutionary modules. Katherine Anderson first discovered a morphogenetic determinant i.e. an mRNA for the snake protein in her laboratory of Cristiane N?sslein Volhard. ââ¬Å"She rescued eggs from homozygous snake mothers by injecting them with small amounts of cytoplasm from wild eggs.â⬠(Gilbert, 1998) Instead of an entire dorsal cuticle being developed, the dorsoventral pattern was restored in them. They also carried out experiments on Drosophila. They showed that a morphogen could be stored as mRNA, but it could be localized to a region of cytoplasm. Modules can associate with other modules in new ways. Examples at molecular level are proteins like ?-catenin, which can be either a part of Wnt pathway or a cell adhesion factor. At cellular level, the Hedgehog module, which is used to make a border in insect blastoderm, is later used in making eyespots of the wing (Keys et al 1999, in Gilbert, seventh ed.). Buffering of modules is also seen, e.g. the ââ¬Å"double assuranceâ⬠of Spemann (1927) (in Gilbert, 7th ed.) Modules play an important role in evolution. Evolutionary biologists consider modules as sub-units or components of a larger system. Averof and Patel (1994) showed that the pattern of Ubx and abd-A Hox gene expression correlates with the presence or absence of the modification of thoracic limbs and feeding maxillipeds.(Gilbert, 1998) The maxillipeds form only when the genes are inactive. In vertebrates, the distinction between cervical and thoracic vertebrae, and that between cervical and lumbar vertebrae is mediated by Hox genes.à This is apart from the main role in development. Thus, modular units play important parts in an embryo. Works Cited Gilbert, Scott. ââ¬Å"Modules: Key Pieces in the Integration of Developmental and Evolutionary Biology.â⬠Chapter 23. The History of Batu Caves
The History of Batu Caves The Batu Caves is all made up of limestone, as we can see when we are inside the cave or even driving on the highway crossing Batu Caves. The limestone is said to be around 400 million years old the limestone forming Batu Caves is. Some of the cave entrances were used as shelters by the native people. Batu Caves became famous only after the limestone hills were recorded by colonial authorities including Daly and Syers as well as American Naturalist, William Hornaday in 1878.The history of Batu Caves all started in the year of 1891 when Mr. K. Thamboosamy Pillai, who were one of the founders that also founded the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Dhevasthanam, Kuala Lumpur, on top of that he send his associates that is Sri Thiruvengadam Pillai and Sri Kanthapa Thevar to do a research for an suitable place of worship for Lord Sri Murugan. It was in that year, that the influential descendant of Indian immigrants from Tamil Nadu, India, Mr.K. Thamboosamy Pillai installe d the ââ¬Ëmurtiââ¬â¢ or consecrated idol of Lord Murugan in the 400 ft high Temple Cave. At the following year ahead, the Thaipusam festival in the Tamil month of Thai during the month of January to February has been celebrated there as the annual festival of Batu Caves. In addition to that, the steps to go up the Batu Caves was all wooden steps up an it was built in the year of 1920 and have since been replaced by 272 concrete steps.

Essay on National Governmentââ¬â¢s Education Policies and Federalism
Essay on National Governmentââ¬â¢s Education Policies and Federalism Essay on National Governmentââ¬â¢s Education Policies and Federalism Essay on National Governmentââ¬â¢s Education Policies and FederalismThe increasing role of the national government in the regulation and development of educational policies has a dubious effect. On the one hand, the federal governmentââ¬â¢s education policies contribute to the better funding of education institutions and programs but, on the other hand, the problem of the effective use of federal funds arises because the federal government cannot be as efficient as local authorities and public to determine which educational needs to fund at the moment. Hence, the increase role of the federal government in education policies opens new educational opportunities but, on the other hand, it raises the problem of the effective use of federal funds and respect to federalist principles of the US democracy and state. In fact, the federal governmentââ¬â¢s education policies are effective as long as new educational programs are created and supported by the federal government. The federa l government contributes to the broader coverage of public education and federal support of public schools (Levin-Waldman, 2012). However, the use of funds provided by the federal government is less effective compared to the state and local level because the federal government cannot always understand and meet needs of specific public schools. In this regard, even limited financial resources supplied by local and state governments could be used more effectively to meet specific needs of each public school. Thus, the increased role of the federal government in education policies challenges conventional federalist norms and principles. The federal government attempts to take initiative and lead in funding and, therefore, development of education policies. However, such policies are less effective than traditional federalist policies with the wider involvement of the local authorities because the federal government cannot manage public education as effectively as local and state authori ties.

What Is a GPA Scale The 4.0 Scale
What Is a GPA Scale The 4.0 Scale SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips GPA is a measurement of your academic success in high school that colleges will consider very strongly in the admissions process. But what is a GPA scale? Different high schools may use different GPA scales, and itââ¬â¢s important to know how these scales work so that you get a better idea of where you stand. In this article, Iââ¬â¢ll tell you what a GPA scale is and the types of scales you might see used at your high school. // Whatââ¬â¢s a High School GPA Scale? GPA (Grade Point Average) is a way of measuring academic achievement in high school. Itââ¬â¢s a numeric value that correlates with a studentââ¬â¢s grades. Each letter grade that a student earns is worth a certain number of grade points depending on how high it is and, in some cases, the level of the class where it was earned. // The average of the grade points from all of a studentââ¬â¢s converted letter grades in high school makes up his or her final GPA. Typically, one of two GPA scales will be used to measure the grades of students throughout their time in high school. The unweighted GPA scale goes up to a 4.0 and doesnââ¬â¢t take class difficulty into account.A weighted GPA scale typically goes up to a 5.0 and does consider the difficulty of a studentââ¬â¢s classes.Iââ¬â¢ll go over the basics of these two scales in the next couple of sections to give you a sense of how they work. // Unweighted 4.0 GPA Scale The unweighted GPA scale is the most commonly used GPA scale. Itââ¬â¢s found in high schools and colleges alike and is very straightforward. // Essentially, the highest GPA you can earn is a 4.0, which indicates an A average in all of your classes. A 3.0 would indicate a B average, a 2.0 a C average, a 1.0 a D, and a 0.0 an F.This scale does not take the levels of your courses into account. For example, if youââ¬â¢re in all honors classes and earn a B average, youââ¬â¢ll have the same GPA as someone in all low-level classes who has earned a B average. // Hereââ¬â¢s a table that shows how this scale corresponds to each letter grade: Letter Grade GPA A+ 4.0 A 4.0 A- 3.7 B+ 3.3 B 3.0 B- 2.7 C+ 2.3 C 2.0 C- 1.7 D+ 1.3 D 1.0 F 0.0 // Some high schools make more specific distinctions in GPA based on class averages out of 100 (i.e. a 90 average would mean a lower GPA than a 92 average even though theyââ¬â¢re both technically A-s).Look at this GPA scale for more specific numbers. On a weighted scale, which typically goes up to a 5.0 instead of the standard 4.0, a student who earns an A in a high level class will have a higher GPA than a student who earns an A in a low-level class. While this scale is used frequently in high schools, youââ¬â¢re unlikely to encounter it in college since it takes course difficulty into account. // For the highest-level classes like honors and AP, students get an extra 1.0 added to the unweighted GPA value of their grades due to the difficulty of the class. A B in an honors class would be equivalent to a 4.0 on a weighted GPA scale, and an A would be equivalent to a 5.0. Some schools also offer mid-level classes between honors and low-level. For these courses, 0.5 points are usually added to the unweighted GPA, meaning an A would be equivalent to a 4.5. Grades in low-level classes are measured using the unweighted scale, so an A in those classes would be equivalent to a 4.0. Weighted GPA scales give colleges a better initial sense of the academic potential of students based on the rigor of their coursework. They also lead to greater accuracy in class rankings. Students who take lower level classes wonââ¬â¢t surpass high-level students in the rankings as frequently because GPAs are adjusted for class difficulty. This can help incentivize students to take more difficult classes and challenge themselves since it wonââ¬â¢t harm their GPAs unless they end up earning signficantly poorer grades. Figure skaters are judged partially on the difficulty of their routines, so a skater who executes an easy routine flawlessly won't prevail over another skater who executes a difficult routine with a couple of mistakes. It's the same with weighted GPA. How far away are you from a 4.0? Use our easy GPA tool to pinpoint how well you have to do in future classes to get your GPA up to that magical number. Why Do GPA Scales Matter to You? Itââ¬â¢s important to be aware of the GPA scale used by your high school so that you can make responsible choices in the college application process. If youââ¬â¢re aiming for selective colleges, you need to understand that your chances might be different depending on whether your GPA is weighted or unweighted. A student with a 3.8 unweighted GPA who is in all Honors classes will have better chances of admission at a selective college than a student with a 4.0 weighted GPA who is in all low-level classes. Much of the advice youââ¬â¢ll see about GPA is based on an unweighted scale because the unweighted scale is a more universally understood metric. This means that if your school uses weighted GPAs youââ¬â¢ll have to make judgments about how you might compare to other applicants based on your coursework and not just the numbers. For example, if the average unweighted GPA for admitted students at a college is a 3.5, you canââ¬â¢t always assume that youââ¬â¢ll get in easily with a 4.0 weighted GPA. The two numbers are on completely different scales. Youââ¬â¢ll have to take stock of the overall rigor of your coursework and selectivity of the school to see whether you compare favorably to other applicants. Itââ¬â¢s smart to be aware of the different GPA scales so that you have a better understanding of how much you might need to raise your GPA in order to get into a school that you really like. // Conclusion High school GPAs are measured on one of two scales: weighted or unweighted. The unweighted scale is most common, and the highest possible GPA on this scale is a 4.0. The unweighted scale doesnââ¬â¢t take the difficulty of your classes into account. Weighted scales are also used at many high schools. Typically, they go up to a 5.0. A weighted scale will factor in the difficulty of your classes, so an A in an honors class translates to a full grade point higher than an A in a low-level class. Itââ¬â¢s valuable to have some knowledge of how GPA is measured by your school so that you end up with a more informed perspective going into the college application process. Your GPA will play a significant role in college admissions decisions, so keep working hard to maintain and improve it! What's Next? I don't care, anything along the lines of engineering. I am doing Annotated Bibliography
I don't care, anything along the lines of engineering. I am doing Industrial engineering if you can find any articles around that - Annotated Bibliography Example I am amazed to see the application of supply chain management in medical and emergency missions, rescue and relief efforts in times of disasters and other societal settings improving the living standards. Thus, I see a great prospect for the supply chain management in the near future. Supply chain management is an important aspect for efficient production because supply chain controls and manages the flow of product. In other terms, supply chain controls the flow of capital in an industrial setting. The title supply chain management encompasses all the activities from planning and control of materials and/or information within different parts of one organization or between different companies. Supply chain management links different portions of industrial activities like manufacturing, purchasing, distribution of commodity and its transportation. Thus, every field of engineering gets integrated with the operation of production efficiency (Reddi and Moon). It is interesting to note that in an industry, important activities like transportation, warehousing, and inventory control, sourcing, procurement and supply management all comes under the single head of supply management. While, outside of the organization, supply chain management includes interactions with suppliers, distributors, carriers, and with customers. Thus, results in increased market share and better competitive advantage. In order to successfully compete in the market company needs two things; first to control the expenditure on the production (i.e., product should be cost effective) and secondly, the product must satisfy the needs or desires of the costumes. In such a way, the company maintains its competitiveness while expanding market share. Pricing, thus, plays an important role in this regard (Zhang, Wang and Li). Itââ¬â¢s amazing that the whole world works like a giant supply chain system. Highly developed supply chain necessitates best infrastructures, i.e., roads, railway network,

Feilds write up Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Feilds write up - Case Study Example Fieldsââ¬â¢. The size of the company was enormous. Their preparationsââ¬â¢ styling was different of baking from frozen dough the croissants, bread, hot soups and sandwiches, which was taken as an extended business from Mrs. Fieldsââ¬â¢ cookies. Naturally the company wanted to get the leverage of its MIS system, which was not updated to absorb the different administrative functionaries of LPB, as it was customized to absorb the administration work of the famous Chocolate Chip Company in the MIS system of Mrs. Fieldsââ¬â¢ Cookies. It was taken for granted that without changing the design of the MIS system to accommodate the overhead functions related to accounting, finance personal, human resource, training, and development of the acquired company, Mrs. Fieldsââ¬â¢ Cookies would be able to leverage from the current MIS system successfully. Assuming and finding myself in the position of an LPB store manager, I should be a puzzled lot. The mechanism that I was accustomed to work in was suddenly snatched just like a sheet from under oneââ¬â¢s feet. Finding none of the reported to staff at the senior level could be detrimental to the organizationââ¬â¢s financial health and affect performance in all departments. As stated by Randy, the organization structure of LPB was traditional in comparison to robust IT applications employed by the IT department to organically control the empire of cookies stores expanded worldwide. Before removing the 50 overheads of the acquired company, whose store manager I am supposed to be, it would be like crippling the whole structure of the newly acquired company without replacing or changing the system wide practices. At least some technical training was needed to be imparted to the staff to become accustomed to the work processes of organization sub structures under mechanistic and org anic structure heads. Store managers under Mrs. Fieldsââ¬â¢ Cookies organization structure were

What is desistance and how can it be explained Essay
What is desistance and how can it be explained - Essay Example Desistance can be classified as being either primary or secondary. Primary desistance refers to behavioural changes while secondary relates to changes in identity. Secondary desistance works best for people with a protracted history of heinous crimes because a change in identity would be more effective compared to a mere behavioural alteration. In as much as desistance is based on a personal opinion, the social setup also has influences. People would be compelled to desist from or prolong criminal acts by the manner in which society views them and how the individual sees his or her place in society. If the society is positive about former criminals, the probability of the individuals desisting from crime is higher (Weaver, 2012, p. 351). The aspect of intervention in the desistance process works towards initiating hope and motivates the offenders that are ready for the cessation of crime. Interventions can be done by professionals at a personal level or through social networking that is able to reach many individuals at the same time. Therefore, interventions inculcate and develop individual self-determination and individual strengths. In addition, the state policy on criminal matters adversely affects desistance. For instance, in a situation where the policies seem to be hard on criminals, desistance is frustrated because such individuals are not motivated to turn away from offences. To understand the explanation of desistance, it is imperative to comprehend three factors. Firstly, the correlation between age and committing offences, secondly, the reason behind the commencement of the desistance process and lastly, the motives that cause people to desist from crime. Age is a vital factor as far as desistance matters are in question. For instance, crime or offences reduce with age. An individual is less likely to commit crimes during his or

Tough Love Essay Example for Free
Tough Love Essay ââ¬Å"If you have to make a choice, to be feared is much safer than to be lovedâ⬠(46). Niccolà ² Machiavelli declared this in The Prince while explaining how to be an extraordinary leader. If leaders are feared they will be respected by their people and other countries, thus keeping justice and maintaining control. If a leader is feared, they will receive respect from their people and other countries. People will not turn against the leader, but if the people love him they would willingly take advantage of him. Likewise, if a country is in fear of a certain leader or country they would never think of turning against or taking advantage of them. As Niccolà ² Machiavelli stated in The Prince, ââ¬Å"People are less concerned with offending a man who makes himself loved than one who makes himself feared; the reason Is that love is a link of obligation which men, because they are rotten, will break any time they think doing so serves their advantage; but fear involves dread of punishment, form which they can never escapeâ⬠(46). Feared leaders can preserve justice in their country. Machiavelli declared, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Hannibalâ⬠¦ having an immense army, which included men of many different races and nations, and which he led to battle in distant countries, he never allowed them to fight among themselves or to rise against him, whether his fortune was good or bad. The reason for this could only be his inhuman cruelty, which, along with his countless other talentsâ⬠¦ without the cruelty, his other qualities would never have sufficedâ⬠(46-47). This leader used forms of cruelty to instill a feeling of fear in his people. His people lived in apprehension of all injustice to avoid penalty many times defined as death. People will be less likely to act out against or try to over throw their leader if they are afraid of him. Above all, one will be able to effectively maintain control over his people and various other countries. The people will follow their leader in whatever situation takes place. However, if the people loved their leader, they would not feel guilt or remorse in disobeying their leader; thereforeà he does not have a complete control over his people. This could result in chaos. Armies who fear their leader will do what the leader feels is necessary or called for, in order to avoid crossing him. Similarly to what is said of his people, other countries would not attack or try to overthrow the leader. Countries would rather ally with a feared country or leader, because of this weaker countries that ally with the leader could than fall under control of the leader. Once a country, its people, and other countries fear a leader, he will have complete power over them and they would give themselves to him to avoid punishment. When the leader has control he will easily be able to uphold righteousness and justice. When one fears an authority figure it is because they know that if they happen to do wrong that authority figure will not think twice before putting us in our place or chastising us. Justifying Mutual Deceit in William Shakespeares Sonnet 138 Essay exa
Justifying Mutual Deceit in William Shakespeare's Sonnet 138 A common conception of William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s poetry entails complex language and hidden meanings. Shakespeare is famous for his ability to author a web of images that creates layers of interpretations and understandings. In Sonnet 138 however, Shakespeare is more direct in describing his relationship with his lover by avoiding imagery and metaphors, explaining to the reader that this seemingly unconventional relationship is indeed justified. Shakespeare constructs a persona of the speaker in a way that establishes a casual and conversational relationship with the reader. This allows for an open disclosure of the mutual hypocrisies between himself and his lover while leaving his steadfast candor to convince the reader that Shakespeareââ¬â¢s affirmations concerning love are acceptable. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s elimination of imagery allows for a reliance on diction that he takes advantage of by selecting words with double meanings, creating a reflexive manner about the poem for the reader to explore. Shakespeare conveys the meaning of the poem, that mutual deceit is compatible with love, with the seemingly straightforward language that connects the reader to the speaker while forcing the reader to think twice about certain words that deepen the surface understanding. As in all Shakespearean sonnets, the structure of the poem plays an important role, as the three quatrains and final couplet often represent transitions in tone, language and meaning. However, Sonnet 138 differs from the norm as the first two quatrains do... ...as such a connection with the speaker and wants to understand the speakerââ¬â¢s situation, Shakespeare justifies the hypocrisies on the surface of this love scenario. The speaker takes hold of his audience in an inviting conversational manner that forces them to appreciate what he has to say. As the speaker asserts his knowledge of the way love works, the reader agrees because the speaker articulates every word for the explicit purpose of reader understanding. The speakerââ¬â¢s honed and efficient language makes the reader hang on every word, creating realizations in the puns with several words that deepen the meaning of the poem and better illustrate to the reader that seeming truth, mutual deceit and love can exist in harmony.
